We are still in the 3rd slot. Unless Denver blows the lead against the Knicks.

Spurs lost... Jazz losing to Portland. Denver winning... NOH neck to neck with the lowly Kings right now. Lakers lost but nobody gives a damn anyway.

If Denver wins tonight, we will down to the 4th.

    NBA.com has it right.

    ESPN standings are officially worthless.

There's currently a 3 team tie between Denver, Houston, and San Antonio. In games between the 3 teams, Houston is 5-3 and Denver and SA are each 3-4. That gives Houston the tiebreak and the #2 seed. Denver is 2-1 vs the Spurs so they're #3 leaving SA #4.

Of course, this will change after the DEN-NYK game is over. But it just shows me that ESPN can't be relied upon for accurate standings. They have it listed 2. DEN; 3: SA; 4:HOU.

    this explains it

    http://www.nba.com/statistics/playoff_picture.html

being division leader guarantees a top 4 seed but doesn't guarantee ranking within those 4 seeds. since HOU, DEN, and SA all have the same record, the next tiebreaker is record among the tied teams. And we win that tiebreaker b/c we split with SA and have a 3-1 record against DEN.

The only thing I can figure is that NBA.com decided to not factor that questionable "division leader" tiebreak but ESPN.com is still holding on to it. They might have eliminated the Rockets from the equation and relegated them to 4th because they're not leading the division. Then they just did a 2 team tiebreak between Denver and SA.

I still think that "division leader" tiebreak doesn't factor into playoff seedings which is why NBA.com probably stopped using it to calculate their standings.

EDIT: I meant to edit my previous post, not create a new one. Oops.

Maybe espn is right. Den and SA are division leaders.

the reason we are in second briefly is because we are in a three way tie with Denver and the Spurs after the SA loss tonight.

5-3 against the two teams gives us the higher seed

Wait. I thought per discussion above, that we had the tiebreaker against the Spurs? So now why does ESPN.com and NBA.com have us behind the Spurs?

Three way tie temporarily as the Nuggets/Knicks game was still in progress. That game ended and broke the 3 way tie. So you go back to 2 way tie and since we are in same division as Spurs it goes to Division record which Spurs are half game up on Rockets.
