Thanks for that ScriboErgoSum. I just realized that the Spurs might possibly have to face the Mavs in the first round.... beautiful!

I'd love to see Mavs-Spurs and Suns-Lakers in the first round.

The Playoffs are going to be brutal but a ton of fun to watch.

Suns-Lakers will be great. Shaq playing against the Lakers in the playoffs. He has to be motivated.

Clinched #9 Seed

Here is the latest batch of Magic Numbers after all games were played on April 4.

That was an ugly, but welcome victory for the Rockets over the inept Sonics. All Magic Number drop 1

We are knocking on the door of the Playoffs. A win Sunday coupled with a Warrior loss at New Orleans puts us in. Obviously, we should set our sights on a higher seed, but getting a Playoff berth is the first step to take on that path and a pretty significant one considering where we have been this season.

I had a great time at the game tonight. It was weirdly quiet, almost like a funeral. However, it was Fan Appreciation Month, and the announcers kept trying to artificially pump everyone up by giving away free stuff (iPods, TV’s, Cash, and a big middle finger for every fan from David Stern). My wife and I were yelling louder than our whole upper deck section. Kinda sad. Hopefully it’s not the last Rockets game in Seattle. I love Portland, but I’m going to hate having to drive down there to see the Rockets instead of taking a 15 minute bus ride. Clay Bennet = Antichrist.

The Lakers tripped up the Mavericks. The Mavericks’ Magic Number drops an additional point. The Lakers clinched a Playoff berth with their victory. The Magic Number for the Lakers over Suns for the Pacific crown is now 5.

The Jazz snapped the Spurs’ 8 game winning streak by pounding San Antonio by 26. The Spurs’ Magic Number drops an additional point. The Magic Number for the Jazz over Nuggets for the Northwest crown is now 3.

The Hornets beat the Knicks, closing in on the #1 seed. Their Magic Number over the Spurs is 5 for the Southwest crown. The Hornets also punched a ticket to the Playoffs with their victory.

The Warriors hammered the Grizzlies and moved just a half game back of Denver for the final spot in the Playoffs (although they don’t have Tie Breaks against the Nuggets or Mavericks)

The Suns pounded the Wolves in Phoenix.

On tap for Saturday: Kings at Nuggets is the only game of note

Clinched #9 Seed

Here is the latest batch of Magic Numbers after all games were played on April 5.

Win, and we’re in.

The Kings played spoiler again, this time tripping up the Nuggets. Denver’s Magic Number drops a point. It also clinches a Playoff spot for the Spurs.

With the Nugget loss, Denver and the Warriors both stand at 2. Since they play in Golden State Thursday, one of those teams will drop a point and have a Magic Number no higher than 1. That means we only have to win one more, and we’re in the Playoffs regardless of how the Warriors fare against the Hornets.

Hopefully Sunday will be a good day for the Rockets, and we’ll emerge with a golden ticket to the Playoffs. We’re playing the basketball piñata known as the LA Clippers and need to win this game to keep pace with the Lakers, Suns, Jazz, and maybe Spurs.

Also on tap for Sunday: Warriors at Hornets, Mavs at Suns, Spurs at Blazers, Lakers at Kings, Nuggets at Sonics

I am actually pretty afraid of the Clippers game. The Clippers may be bad as a team, but Brand is back, and any good big man dominates on the boards against the small Rockets. Thorton will be trouble too, and Battier will be busy on Maggette. If we play like we did against Sacramento, then we'll likely lose, but Adelman needs to emphasise that the next game seals the deal for the Rockets.

Great job as always Scribo!

You've got to have some faith! We'll take care of the Clippers, especially with a chance to clinch a Playoff berth. Brand's still working his way back into shape, averaging only 7 rebounds a game in his 2 games since returning. Kamen's out.

It's going to be a good day for the Rockets!

We were in with a win regardless of the Warriors game, since the Nuggets and Warriors play on Thursday.

With the Warriors losing, we can officially close them out tonight.

The Nuggets loss last night already meant the Rockets were in with a win. The Nuggets and the Warriors play each other Thursday meaning it was impossible for both teams to get to 52 wins.

A win tonight or any night clinches the playoffs for the Rockets.
Now that the Warriors have 31 losses - any loss by them clinches a spot, regardless of tie-breakers.

As of Sunday afternoon, the only way the Rockets could miss the playoffs would be if the Nuggets go 5-1, with the loss coming to the Warriors and the Warriors would have to go 5-0. Of course the Rockets would have to 0-6 and they'd have to come out on the losing end of the following string of tiebreakers...

Record against in games against each other...
Houston...4-4
Denver....4-4
G State...4-4

Conf record.
Houston..29-23
Denver...32-20
G State..31-21
Rockets would be 9th.

So in other words...
Rockets miss playoffs if...
Hou goes 0-6
G State goes 5-0
Denver goes 5-1, with loss coming obviously to G State.

That's it. That is the only scenario under which the Rockets miss the playoffs.

With the Rocket’s victory over the Clippers tonight, they have officially clinched the #8 Seed. Clutch Fans, we are going to the playoffs.

In a season that started with huge expectations, a new coach, a maligned group of rookies, concerns about point guard and power forward, and a young GM with a weird mathematical approach to team-building, we have certainly gone through our ups and downs.

Rafer was Public Enemy #1 and a prejudged felon only to steady his game, clear his name, solidify his position as starter, and play the best ball of his career. Stevie Franchise came back, and Stevie Franchise morphed into broken-down Steve Francis. Fans still lamented the Rudy Gay trade while Shane quietly busted his ass on defense, and now Shane is a strong contender for Defensive Player of the Year. Mike James was viewed by some as a savior\sparkplug who never should have been traded, Mike James came back to Houston for Juwan, and then a washed-up Mike James got himself shipped to New Orleans with Bonzi. By the way, Bonzi says the beignets are fantabulous in the Big Easy.

Steve Novak couldn’t play defense, Steve Novak still can’t play defense, but Steve Novak finally hit the game-winning three for which Clutch Fans have been waiting. TMac struggled to adjust to Rick’s new system, TMac was hurt and the Rockets were better off without him, and TMac came back and the Rockets were unstoppable. Deke should have retired, and we now know that Deke has squirreled away a bottle from the Fountain of Youth. Scola was an international player who struggled to adjust to the NBA, and then Scola became a savvy rookie who had veteran experience, international championship pedigree, and fabulous hair. Three words: Carl Freaking Landry!

The Rockets looked terrible learning Rick’s system, the Rockets would have been better if Van Gundy stayed, then the Rockets morphed into a team that (at times) cut, picked, rolled, and thrived in Rick’s offense while maintaining the tough defense set under Jeff. Yao looked good, Yao looked great, Yao became the unquestioned centerpiece of the team, then Yao went down with a morale-crushing injury. We shot out of the gate on fire, we came crashing to the ground, we looked mediocre for more than half a season, we won 12 in a row, we were buried for dead, we pushed our magical winning streak to 22 in a row and united Clutch Fans, young and old, fair-weathered and hardcore, recent and old school, local and global, on one enormous bandwagon.

And now we’re in the playoffs. In the deepest, most competitive Western Conference ever, the Rockets have punched themselves a well-deserved ticket to the dance. Rockets, thank you! You have made the 2007-2008 season one that I will remember. So many seasons come and go without much distinction, but 20 years from now, I will look back fondly on the run that our team has put together and the players that made it happen.

I don’t know what seed they’ll wind up or how far they’ll go. Maybe they’ll have a charmed run in the Playoffs like some former Rocket squads that stunned everybody by catching fire at the exact right moment. However, those are thoughts for tomorrow or next week. I’m definitely savoring this one tonight. How sweet it is!

Wow, the Rockets have won 52 games and they still have 5 games left to play.

I can't phatom them being this solid without Yao Ming in the Middle. Tracy McGrady is really a great player. He knows how to get his team mates involved. And he knows when to take over.

McGrady, Battier, and Scola inspire fundamentals throughout the team. AWSOME!!!!

Ladies and Gents, this is the single greatest magic number post this board has ever seen.

Funny how there is no mention of magic numbers, but it's still the greatest.

allllll i want is for them to get out of the first round. I am tired of hearing about tmacs record in the playoffs. 22 game streak + 1 playoff series win, i will be more than happy. anything else will be a bonus. :)

We're a game up on Phoenix and Utah and are in position to have home court for the first round. That's the next goal.

I think the magic number to finish ahead of the Suns and Jazz is 5 for both teams.
