I'm assuming the Nuggets will beat out the Warriors for #7, and that the Suns and Lakers swap for this:

Round 1 Round 2
1 Hornets
8 Warriors 1 Hornets
4 Jazz 5 Rockets
5 Rockets
2 Spurs
7 Nuggets 2 Spurs
3 Suns 3 Suns
6 Lakers

The Lakers\Suns matchup would be awesome with Shaq in Phoenix. I think he decapitates Kobe when Mamba tries to drive the lane. Hopefully they call a charge on Kobe's bleeding corpse when that happens.

Suns\Spurs again in the second round would be awesome. I think the Spurs take that one.

Beating the Hornets would be rough for the Rockets, and then taking down the Spurs would be even more formidable (as Sunday showed), but that's not a bad bracket for us. A lot of quality teams would take each other out.

My dream bracket (and pretty unlikely) is as follows:

Round 1 Round 2 Round 3
1 Hornets
8 Warriors 8 Warriors
4 Nuggets 5 Rockets
5 Rockets 5 Rockets
2 Spurs 2 Spurs
7 Jazz 2 Spurs
3 Suns 3 Suns
6 Lakers

This is true but you never know how things will happen. Look at the 1996-97 Season , there was a similar disparity and a lot of the young players of the time were in the East with Hill, McGrady, O'Neal, Hardaway, D. Stoudamire, and AI.

Then Duncan went to the Spurs, Jordan left, and a lot of them got traded to the West and everything switched. You never know what will happen.

* Indicates that the Tie Break is final and cannot be changed due to the outcomes of upcoming games. The Magic Numbers are calculated on an assumption that we will lose the Tie Break unless it's already been clinched. If we clinch a Tie Break, that will drop the Magic Number 1 point.

Clinched #9 Seed

Here is the latest batch of Magic Numbers after all games were played on March 31.

The Rockets were off tonight, but 4 other teams were playing.

The Suns won a shootout with the Nuggets, snapping their 7 game winning streak. The loss drops the Denver Magic Number by 1 and also pushes them back down to the #9 spot. It also keeps us at the #6 seed. These two teams will play again tomorrow in Denver.

The Mavericks briefly halted their freefall, beating the punching bag known as the Clippers.

The Jazz weren’t too happy about losing to the Wolves last night. Utah took out their frustrations on Washington and crushed the Wizards by 42. Ouch. The Jazz picked up another game on the Nuggets for the Northwest division. Their Magic Number to clinch over the Nuggets is 6.

Rockets continue their road trip Tuesday with the first of 5 games against inferior teams. @Kings is the most difficult and maybe the only difficult one in that stretch, so we need to start things off by stomping on Sacramento before moving on to @Blazers, @Sonics, @Clippers, Sonics. We can put ourselves in the Playoffs by sweeping this stretch.

Also on tap for Tuesday: Hornets at Magic, Warriors at Spurs, Suns at Denver (The Sequel)

It is very possible that by this time next week, we will have assured ourselves of at least the 6 seed.

Actually the Magic Number for the Jazz to clinch over the Nugget is 5. I miscalculated earlier.

As a sidenote, I'd hate to be the Wolves on Wednesday when they have to go to Utah. I think the Jazz might still have payback on their minds. Over\Under on their margin of victory. 35?

Scribo, you can answer this for me. Is it theoretically possible for the Rockets to end up in 6th and face the Lakers in Round 1 with home court?

The way I'm thinking this could happen is the Lakers, Rockets, and Suns all end up with the same record, with L.A. getting the 3rd seed and division title because they have the tiebreaker over Phoenix, and Phoenix getting the 5th seed because they'd have the tiebreaker over us(if for example they beat us at Toyota Center in a few weeks). We'd have home court however because we won the season series with the Lakers.

It is my understanding that's exactly how it would work. Normal threeway Tie Breaks don't apply because they have to decide the division winner first. Then it would unfold exactly like you said. Crazy stuff, eh?

This scenario won't happen now, but if we had wound up tied at the top with the Lakers and Hornets and the Lakers had beaten the Hornets in their last matchup, the Hornets would win the division as would the Lakers. They get a top 4 seed as division winners, and the Rockets get a top 4 seed by having the winningest record that didn't win a division. But according to threeway tie rules, you first go to combined head-to-head. Rockets are 4-3, Lakers are 3-4, and Hornets are 4-4. We would get the #1 seed even though we didn't win our division.

I don't think the Rockets will end up with a Top 4 seed. The best I can realistically see happening is a 5 or 6 seed with home court advantage. The Suns game is huge.

It definitely won't happen now, but it was an academic exercise and something that interested me a few weeks ago. Just another example of what craziness can result with three team ties and the seeding system used by the NBA.

Agree with you on the Suns, and also the Jazz. We need to make sure we beat both of those teams out. The best way to do that is beat them head to head, take the Tie Breaks, and knock those Magic Numbers down 3. We're starting to run out of tarmac here...

Clinched #9 Seed

Here is the latest batch of Magic Numbers after all games were played on

April 1.
What a miserable frustrating loss. I’m taking a deep-breath and looking at the schedule. We have @Blazers, @Sonics, @Clippers, Sonics. Win all 4, and we’re in the playoffs (with the Nugget and Warriors playing April 11).

The Nuggets outgunned the Suns in a shootout in Denver. The loss drops the Phoenix Magic Point a point. Denver moves up to the #8 seed.

The Spurs beat up on the Warriors. The loss drop the Golden State Magic Number a point as well as moving them to the #9 spot.

The Hornets won a nail-biter over the Magic tonight. They look like they’re going to keep the #1 spot. They’ve had a solid road-trip, going 4-1 and winning several close games over tough teams, and they get a gift-wrapped @Heat, Knicks on their schedule next.

On tap for Wednesday: Hornets at Heat, Wolves at Jazz, Warriors at Mavs, Blazers at Lakers

Not to be negative, but do you guys think we are in any danger of missing the playoffs altogether? We're only 3 or 4 games up on the last spot. I'm going to be happy with being in the playoffs wherever we land, because let's face it, the disparity between the 1 seed and the 6 seed is so minimal that it doesn't even matter. We're going to be matched up with a really solid West team either way--but I'd really like to make sure we make it there first.

This Sacramento loss is making me a little nervous, yes, but the West has been so crazy that I really don't want to jump the gun and act like we're in the playoffs for sure, especially given how mediocre we've looked since the Atlanta game a couple weeks ago.

We only need to win 4 games to clinch a playoff spot. We still have @Blazers, @Sonics, @Clippers, Sonics, Clippers left on our schedule, and I think we definitely win at least 4 of those. 5 victories gets us the #6 seed. It's going to be dicey beating out the Suns, but if we win our last games with them, our prospects are excellent.

Let he who has Latin in his username be of all posters most true. May four out of five do the trick. May Houston do even better in fact.

So let it be written. So let it be done.

I speak Latin, ergo I must be right. ;)

It shall be etched in stone and cried from the heavens. At least 4 of 5 and a berth in the Playoffs of the Conference in the West. The Suns will be eclipsed, and the Jazz silenced. Fear the red glare from the Rocket. They shall claim the Seed of #5 and the advantage of home court so they may smite their old foe from the city by the lake.

Why stop there? Pat Riley can even come off the bench to play some garbage minutes in this blowout game against NO.

For those who are panicking (and you know who you are) lhere's a look at some upcoming games in the West. These all feature two participants in the top 9, so Magic Numbers will fall for one team each game. Each game we win in that list (Sun, @Nuggets, @Jazz), we drop all Magic Numbers 1, and we reduce our opponent's Magic Number by 3 (1 for beating them, 1 for them losing, and 1 for us taking the Tie Break).

04/02 - Warriors at Mavs
04/04 - Spurs at Jazz
04/04 - Mavs at Lakers
04/06 - Warriors at Hornets
04/06 - Mavs at Suns
04/08 - Jazz at Hornets
04/09 - suns at Spurs
04/10 - Nuggets at Warriors
04/10 - Jazz at Mavs
04/11 - Suns at Rockets
04/11 - Hornets at Lakers
04/12 - Nuggets at Jazz
04/13 - Spurs at Lakers
04/13 - Rockets at Nuggets
04/14 - Rockets at Jazz
04/14 - Warriors at Suns
04/16 - Jazz at Spurs
04/16 - Hornets at Mavs

It's helpful to remember that as we win these next batch of 4 games, other teams will be facing tough competition, dropping their Magic Numbers as well. We just need to relax after this last game and keep an eye on where we are. We are in outstanding shape to make the playoffs and in solid contention for the #5 seed and home court.

The good news. The Rockets play the Clipps twice in the closing run.

The bad news. The Clipps likely can't catch the Knicks, TWolves & Grizz in the Lottery standings. And Elton Brand is about ready to return.
