Okay, after a quick read through, I think it's Rockets vs Jazz or Rockets vs Spurs with Homecourt up in the air.

I don't think there is anyway possible that the Rockets could face the Suns. Let me double check.

Just one day, we have fallen from possibly #1 to possibly #6. That's just crazy.

Suns win out. Rockets lose to Utah and beat Clips. Spurs lose to Spoilers and beat Jazz.

Suns are #3, Jazz #4, Spurs #5, Rockets #6. We'd have home court over the Suns. I love three team tie breaks.

We could face the Suns if we win out, and the Suns lose out, and the Spurs lose one game. Very unlikely.

I just applied a Spurs loss to the Kings to all 5 scenarios. Only in scenario #3 would it lead to the Rockets playing against the Suns in the playoffs, and with homecourt.

So most likely, it's Rockets vs Jazz
2nd most is Rockets vs Spurs
Very slim is Rockets vs Suns

I stand corrected, that would be Scenario 2 with a Spurs loss to the Kings. Okay, 2 out of 5 scenarios Plus a Spurs loss to the Kings would lead to a Rockets Phoenix series.

That would mean everyone is 55-27, which is scenario #1 instead this time with the Hornets losing to the Mavs AND the Clippers. Do you really think the Hornets are going to lose to the Clippers?

And even if they do, they still win the Division. It'd be tied up 3 ways among Houston, San An, and NO, with all 3 teams beaing 4-4. So then it'd be division record, which would knock out Houston and make it between San An and NO, and NO would win b/c of conf record.

Basically, the seedings would be scenario #1.

Now if NO miraculously (I can't believe I spelled that correctly on my first attempt :) ) loses to the Clippers and the Mavs and the Spurs lose to the Kings (quite possible), the Rockets could still be #2 by winning vs Utah and Clippers and end up facing Jazz in rd 1.

Add to that crazy impossible scenario a Kings win over the Lakers, then you got the Rockets as #1 facing the Nuggets in rd 1 (which might not be so desired any more).

All the west teams are good and all have some flaws. The playoffs shouldn't be a cakewalk for any western team.

Supposedly the Spurs expect Manu back for the playoffs, so I really want to avoid the Spurs. The Suns just scare me all together, and even though I hate the Jazz, right now I consider them the lesser of 3 evils! The only other thing I'm looking at is the best position to be in for a second round matchup. It would sure be nice to face the Hornets....

Okay, I'm done feeling down about the Denver game. It was brutally ugly and a very uninspired effort, but I'm trying to keep some perspective. Friday afternoon, nobody (I include myself in this) really thought we would beat the Suns. It was almost presumed we wind up #6 and open on the road against the Spurs or Lakers.

We will now almost certainly face the Jazz, Suns, or Spurs in the first round. All of those are daunting tasks, and getting home court is huge.

A win tonight clinches home court for the Rockets in the first round and most likely the #3 seed (#5 with HCA against the Jazz if the Spurs win out). I won't lie. This game scares me. A lot. If the Rockets play like they did last night, Utah will wipe the floor with them. Yet this Rockets team has shown the heart to dig down deep and produce unexpected victories this season when everyone doubted them.

If we do lose tonight, we can still almost guarantee home court in the first round with one other outcome.

Root hard for Sacramento to beat the Spurs. That reduces San Antonio's number to 2, the same as the Jazz. If we beat the Clippers (and if we don't do that, we're in trouble and this board will be on fire with pessimism), we reduce both of the numbers to 1 and knock out the Suns. Since the Jazz and Spurs play the last game of the season, one of those numbers is getting reduced to zero. If the Spurs beat the Jazz, we'd likely be the #5 seed with home court against the Jazz (#6 with HCA against the Suns if Phoenix wins out). If Utah wins that game, the Jazz move up to #3 and face the Spurs. We would be #4 with HCA and would face the Suns at #5.

I'm looking forward to the game tonight and definitely do not write us off automatically. Hopefully TMac and the gang can play some inspired ball and win a tough one. I still believe!

i thought the picture would be much more clear after last night. but guess what, it's not the case. we, along with a few other teams, can still wind up at different positions - all with a game or 2 left. just insanely amazing.

let's not kid ourselves. last night's ugly loss wasn't in any way a tank job. we're just a bit short-handed plus we didn't put up as much as denver did (almost understandably).

tonight's game is huge. we win we control our own destiny in terms of hca. a must-win situation for us. utah's home record says this is a tall order, but our team has proven the usual throughout the season this year as well. so i'm just hoping for a highly contested game (unlike last night).

and something tells me the spurs are going to lose again to the kings.

No matter what happens in the Rockets-Jazz game tonight, root for the Kings. A win by them all but clinches HCA for the Rockets. If we can't beat the Clips at home on Wednesday then we don't deserve home court.

    http://myespn.go.com/blogs/truehoop/0-32-49/A-Four-Way-Tie-Would-be-Magnificent.html

Why can no sports site break down the tie breaker scenarios? I'm going to have to start charging them money to run analysis.

If the Spurs, Jazz, Rockets, and Suns tie at 55-27, the following happens:

    1) Jazz win the Northwest division get a top 4 seed as do the Hornets (Southwest) and Lakers (Pacific).
    2) Determine the other top 4 seed. In the three team tie break between Houston, Phoenix, and San Antonio, the Suns get the spot because they have the best combined record (5-3) of the three teams. Houston is 4-4, San Antonio 3-5.
    3) Seed 1-4. It would LA and Hornets #1 and #2 (order can still switch). The Jazz have the tie break on the Suns so Utah is #3 and Phoenix #4.
    4) Seed 5-8. The Spurs have the tie break on the Rockets, so San Antonio is #5, the Rockets #6.

If Utah is 55-27, that means the Jazz beat Houston on Monday. So Utah has the tie break and home court over the Rockets.

The Suns have the tie break on the Spurs, so they have home court over the Spurs.

It will definitely be more clear after tonight. Probably.

If we win tonight (tall, tall order), we can still wind up seeded anywhere from #1 - #6, depending on what those Sacramento Spoilers do.

At least after tonight, every team has only 1 game left (except the Hornets). It will still be Wednesday before the merry-go-round finally stops and we know where everyone stands.

Rockets are not getting the #1 seed unless the Kings beat Lakers in LA AND the Clippers beat the Hornets in NO. The Clippers game is 1st, and NO is 3-0 vs them this year and the Clippers also suck hard this year. The Kings game is the 2nd of a b2b...I guess stranger things have happened. I wouldn't bet on it though.

Actually it only takes 1 Hornet loss either in Dallas (who probably has to win to get the #7 seed) or at home against the Clippers. We'd still have to win out AND have the Lakers lose to the Spoilers AND have the Spurs lose at least 1 game. It's pretty unlikely, but this has been one strange season and I will not be surprised by anything that happens.

Then we can revive the threeway tie Rockets get #1 seed conversation. :D
