I find it amazingly hilarious that it's possible to finish the #1 seed, but at the same time, not even win our division. That blows my mind.

Has anyone else read this from Feigen?

    http://blogs.chron.com/nba/2008/04/rockets_roll_the_offense_click.html

"The win on Friday makes it unlikely that the Rockets would fall to sixth. They lead the Suns by two games in the loss column and hold the tie-breaker. Other than that, they could finish anywhere from first to fifth.

As freakishly weird as it is that the Rockets are just one game out of first place and are the fifth seed, here's a twist even stranger.

Without much of a stretch of the imagination, they can finish with the best record in the Western Conference and still be the fifth seed.

Just figure a three-way tie with the Spurs and Hornets, with those teams winning the tie-breaker. The teams all split the season series, putting the tie-breaker on division record. The Rockets lose that, potentially dropping them in that scenario behind the Spurs and Hornets and the other division winners, the Lakers and Jazz.

In this crazy season in the West, things can break many ways. So rather than concern themselves with that just yet, the Rockets clinched their playoff spot and began worrying about the Rockets. Anyone they play is going to be very good, perhaps even good enough to win a championship. For the Rockets, the only goal that matters now is to become better."

You guys are acting like this whole playoff race isnt a big deal. We have a chance to be #1 seed with 3 games left. In the west...the badass west. when's the last time we got to say this....ever lol. this is so sweet, winning #1 would be sooooooooooooooo good. almost as good as getting to finals.

    Here's another gem from Blinebury:

    http://blogs.chron.com/franblinebury/2008/04/its_not_who_its_how_rockets_10.html

    "April 11, 2008
It's not who, it's how: Live blog tonight 8 p.m.

Here's what you do over the final few days of the wildest playoff race in NBA history:

You load all of the numbers and all of the data and all of the trends into the computer.

Then you open the window, take the computer and throw it out into the street.

And hope a truck runs over it.

This is why you can drive yourself crazy trying to figure out playoff matchups.

Night like this. When Shaq and the Suns are supposed to squash the Rockets like bugs.

Only the Rockets turn out to be the windshield and the Suns need to be scraped off."

I say go for everything, isn't ironic that this team was suddenly supposed to be out of the playoff race when Mr. 11 went down with foot injury....and we suddenly have chance to end up as second best record in the league.

Even if we lose, we can still say we didn't have our best player.... :D

All these confusions just show you they should have dumped the concept of division champ long time ago. It's the dumbest thing in sport playoffs systems.

    * Indicates that the Tie Break is final and cannot be changed due to the outcomes of upcoming games. The Magic Numbers are calculated on an assumption that we will lose the Tie Break unless it's already been clinched. If we clinch a Tie Break, that will drop the Magic Number 1 point.

    <B>Clinched #6 Seed</B>

Here is the latest batch of Magic Numbers after the <B>Spurs @ Lakers</B> game.

So much for all the talk about threeway ties for #1 and our brief reign at #3. That was an ugly game. The Rockets couldn’t score, turned it over, and let the Nuggets run wild as they lost big to Denver. We’re not going to get the #1 or #2 seed, barring losses the rest of the way by the Lakers and Hornets and 2 victories for the Rockets. This means we are likely either going to be the #3 or #5 seed. The Lakers are the likely #1 seed and the Hornets are #2.

If we close out the Spurs (Magic Number at 3), we get the #3 seed. If we don’t, we’re #5 or #6. We should beat the Clippers which accounts for 1 point, but we’d need at least 2 of the following 3 to close the Spurs out: Rockets win in Utah, Spurs lose in Sacramento, Jazz win in San Antonio. The #3 seed would be over the Suns or Spurs with home court advantage.

If we win in Utah, we close out the Jazz and Suns and clinch home court in the first round. If the Jazz beat us, we are likely the #5 seed (barring a Spur loss in Sacramento) and the Jazz take the tie breaker and they would have to lose in San Antonio for us to close them out and take home court. However, Manu is unlikely to play and the Jazz would be playing for home court advantage.

If we fall into a three way tie with the Spurs and Suns, the Suns win that tie break and would get the #3 seed, the Spurs would be #5, and the Rockets #6. We would have home court over the Suns by virtue of us owning the 2 team tie breaker over Phoenix. Another threeway tie theory that can get bandied about.

I don’t really like our options, but that’s where we stand. I say go for #3 and home court over the Suns or Spurs. That means try like hell to win tomorrow and root for a Spurs loss. I’d rather go into the Playoffs with home court and some momentum than back in weakly.

As I posted earlier, the Lakers blew out the Spurs in the second half. This reduces the Spurs Magic Number by a point.

The day after blowing a game to the Blazers, the Mavericks bothced another gimme to the Sonics. The win prevents the Mavericks from taking the #7 seed. If they lose to the Hornets and the Nuggets win, Denver would be the #7 seed.

The Nugget victory virtually assures them of a playoff berth. They only have to beat the Grizzlies at home to clinch a Playoff berth. A Warrior loss in Phoenix or at home against the Sonics would also clinch a Playoff berth for Denver.

We play Monday night in Utah. A win closes out the Suns and Jazz. It also clinches home court advantage in the first round and at least the #5 seed for the Rockets. It would probably land us the #3 seed when the smoke clears.

It was definitely a disappointing night, but we’re still in good shape for home court in the first round. We might be drawing the Spurs or Suns, but the Spurs might be more appealing right now than the Jazz. It’s been fun speculating about the #1 seed, and it’s great that the Rockets played well enough to have made some of us (boo to you haters) optimistic about their chances.

Also on tap for Monday: Warriors at Suns, Spurs at Spoilers (Go Sacramento!)

    The remaining schedules:
    <B>Rockets:</B> @Jazz, Clippers
    <B>Hornets:</B> Clippers, @Mavs
    <B>Lakers:</B> Spoilers
    <B>Spurs:</B> @Spoilers, Jazz

    Utah, Spurs and Suns

Jazz are a top 4 team because they won their division. Spurs win the tie break over us by virtue of a better division record, so they get a top 4 seed. The Jazz have the tie break over the Spurs, so the Jazz would be #3 and the Spurs #4. We'd be #5 in this scenario (assuming the Suns are behind us), and we'd open on the road in San Antonio.

I think Laker and Hornets are stuck at either 1 or 2. For argument sake, let's say Lakers beat the Kings, and Hornets beat the Clippers.

Holy Crap...as I'm typing this, Mavs are down by 1, edit, just lost to the Sonics  Mavs are just putting themselves in position to get #8 if they aren't careful. More on this at the end of the thread.

So here are my stupid predictions:

Lakers beat Kings and endup 57-25.
Rockets lose to Utah and beat Clippers and end up 55-27.
Jazz beat Rockets and Spurs and end up 55-27.
Suns beat Warriors and Blazers and end up 55-27.
Spurs beat Kings and lose to Jazz and end up 55-27.
Denver beats Grizz and end up 50-32.

Lakers, Hornets, and Jazz win their divisions and guarantee top 4 seeds. The last team in a top 4 seed is determined through a 3 way tie breaker between San Antonio, Houston, and Phoenix. Among the 3 teams, Suns are 5-3, Rox are 4-4, and Spurs are 3-5.

    That puts
    1) Lakers 57-25
    2) Hornets 56-25 (w/Mavs game undecided)
    3) Jazz 55-27 (head to head over Suns)
    4) Suns 55-27
    5) Spurs 55-27 (head to head over Rockets)
    6) Rockets 55-27
    7) Nuggets or Mavs

If the Mavs beat the Hornets, they'll play the Hornets in round 1.
If the Hornets beat the Mavs, the Mavs will fall to 8 and Nuggets up to 7.

    Other possibilities:
The next most likely scenario (or perhaps the likeliest depending on whether Manu plays) is the Spurs beating the Jazz on the last game of the year. That would mean

    1) Lakers 57-25
    2) Hornets 56-25 (w/game to Mavs undecided)
    3) Spurs 56-26 (Hornets own tie breaker b/c conf record)
    4) Jazz 54-28
    5) Rockets 55-27 (own tie breaker over Suns b/c conf record)
    6) Suns 55-27
    7) Nuggets or Mavs

Those are the two most likely outcomes imo. The Suns can lose to the Warriors. That would not make a difference in scenario #2, but it would make a huge difference in Scenario #1. So here is Scenario #1 with a Suns loss to the Warriors.

    1) Lakers 57-25
    2) Hornets 56-25
    3) Jazz 55-27
    4) Spurs 55-27
    5) Rockets 55-27
    6) Suns 54-28
    7) Nuggets or Mavs

Here are my givens: Rockets will beat the Clippers, Lakers will beat the Kings, and Spurs will beat the Kings, and Nuggets will beat the Grizz. My head is already hurting, so if the Kings or Clippers pull an upset, that's just going to kill me and open up a whole new can of worms.

Wait a minute, if Suns, Spurs and Houston are tied, the best winnin percentage team will get into top 4, that would be the suns, isn't it?

nice analysis. but what if spurs lose both of their games, and rockets beats clippers, that will put spurs #4 and rockets #5 right?

Thanks <B>Kim</B>. We want to root for a Spoiler victory over the Spurs tomorrow night and for the Spurs to beat the Jazz on the last game of the season.

And of course: Go Rockets tomorrow against the Jazz!

We can really narrow this all down tomorrow after the Warriors-Suns, Rockets-Jazz, Spurs-Spoilers games.

    Scenario #4
Rockets beat the Jazz and Clippers.
    Lakers beat Kings.
Spurs beat the Jazz and Kings.
    Hornets beat Clippers.
    Nugs beat Grizz.
    Suns beat Warriors and Blazers.
Jazz lose to Rockets and lose to Spurs.

    1) Lakers 57-25
    2) Hornets 56-25
    3) Spurs 56-26
    4) Jazz 53-29
    5) Rockets 56-26
    6) Suns 55-27
    7) Mavs or Nuggets

Hornets even if the lose to Mavs would still win division b/c of best conference record (b/c all 3 teams are 4-4 amongst one another and then Spurs and Hornets would be tied in division record). Basically Hornets beat teh Clippers, then they win the Southwest.

Scenario #5 is the same as above except Jazz beat the Spurs on the last day

    1) Lakers 57-25
    2) Hornets 56-25
    3) Rockets 56-26
    4) Jazz 54-28
    5) Suns 55-27
    6) Spurs 55-27
    7) Mavs or Nuggets
