Speaking of playoffs, did anybody see this quote from Cato? LOL, relax for a second and lose 11 straight? Take one second off and boom! you don't win a game for three weeks? I didn't know things were that fleeting....
Another thing, why can't they breathe easy? I don't see how more difficult breaths would make them play better.
MAGIC NUMBER = 13 - 1 for each Rockets victory! - 1 for each loss by the 9th place team in the West! It is almost impossible for the 9th team (Jazz) to lose less than 6 games in the next 19. Therefore, Rox may only need win 6-7 more wins to secure a PO spot unless Utah goes crazy.
I don't want to be a downer or anything, but the magic number is actually 14 right now ... we don't know that we'll own the tiebreaker against Utah if for some horrible reason it came down to that. 13 to tie for the last playoff spot, 14 to clinch it. Tim
Actually, there isn't "a" magic number until we play Utah. Since we do have the tiebreaker at the this point, the magic number = 13.
No, it is 13 to clinch the 8th spot. If Rockets go 13-6 the rest of the way and Utah wins out, then Denver will be 9th and out of the playoffs as the Nuggets have two games left with Utah. So if Rockets go 13-6, they'll end up with a 50-32 record. If Utah goes 18-0 they will end up with a 50-32 record as well, however the best that Denver can do in that case is to go 15-2 and thus finish with a 49-33 record, worse than the Rockets, regardless of tiebreaks.
This is correct. The tiebreaker with Utah will only determine who will get the 7 and 8 seeds. The magic number is 13 !!
Regarding the calculation of the MAGIC NUMBER. The magic number is calculated by a given formula based on wins and losses relative to other competing teams wins and losses. As such it is independent of matchups that can or cannot occur! Thus while Utah and Denver competing against one another (for example) may guarantee that one or the other is going to lose; the MAGIC NUMBER calculation doesn't care - its still the same. So quit debating whether its 13 or 14 or whatever the current MAGIC NUMBER is - in one way of looking at it - proponents for either side are both right!
He's correct. The magic number is for getting the 8th position at worst. Therefore, our magic number is our wins + the 9th position team's losses. Utah won so our magic number remains 13 to finish at least in 8th place.
It's only a matter of time the way they've been playing lately. Their remaining schedule is brutal. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if they fell behind Utah and Portland at this rate.
...This thread is so stupid. All of this "magic number" stuff... either the Rockets win a few more games and get in, or they don't. Not to mention that no one seems to be able to figure out a consistent formula for determining this number. But they're going to make the playoffs this year, so even having speculation like this isn't necessary.
The magic number stuff is as simple as 1, 2, 3. 1. A magic number to clintch 8-th spot tie is USELESS. People don't care about that. We all want to know the magic number that clinthes the 8-th spot so Rockets can go to playoff! 2. Rockets record 37-26. 9th Utah record 33-32. If Rockets win 13 games, Rockets clintch 8-th spot with 50-26 record. Even if Utah win all remaining games to reach 50-32 record, it needs to beat Denver twice, which means the best Denver can do is 48-34. That still puts Rockets ahead of Denver. 3. The magic number is reduced by 1 if Rockets win 1 game or 9th Utah lose 1 game. Denver's loss doesn't reduce magic number until it falls behind Utah. Therefore, current magic number: 13
A thread rating of 5 stars disagrees I find it interesting to know what the magic number for the Rockets is. You act like this is something new that we are doing.
Kinda like the lotto balls during draft time, I ask Clutch in his spare time create a magic # display on the front page during this time! or is that asking to be jinxed?
