We shouldn't be using the term magic number. All the magic is used up -- just look at Orlando and the Washington Wizards. The ABC announcers were right last night -- we are down to a tragic number.
Horribly untrue. The Rockets 5-game winning streak happened somewhere in the middle of this thread. The Rockets suckiness is all their own.
FINALLY! The damn number changed! Rockets have really been killin' me lately, and if they mess this up, I'll be killin' myself.
If I'm not mistaken, after tonight the Jazz, Nuggets, and Blazers are all tied with 41-37 records. So does this mean that anytime any of these teams loses a game, the Rockets' magic number goes down?
The magic number will go down one if Utah or Denver lose the a game. Any two-way tie or three-way tie with Portalnd Rockets will win the tie breaker.
It's kind of strange, those teams are so bunched together that even if one of them loses the Rockets magic number doesn't necessarily go down. Right now, the teams we should focus on is Portland and Denver. We need to mathematically eliminate two of those teams in the race for the #7 seed to clinch a playoff spot. The magic number to eliminate Portland is 2 and Denver is 3. With a Rockets win Saturday they knock the magic number down to 1 (thought the Rockets could clinch Friday, but Denver actually holds the tiebreaker win or lose vs the Rocks). And if Portland loses to San Antonio then they're eliminated from the race for the #7 seed. So a Rockets and Spurs win Friday eliminates Portland from consideration for the #7 seed, and knocks the Rockets magic number for a playoff spot down to 1.It's confusing, but with a Rockets and Spurs win Friday the Rockets are in the driver's seat and could clinch Saturday with a win at Utah or a Nuggets loss at home to Portland. Basically, with a Spurs and Rockets win the Rockets would have to lose their last 3 games, and the Nuggets would have to win their last 3 games (which are brutal) to clinch a playoff spot.
A Jazz fan created a program to estimate the chance of making playoff of the 4 teams, LOL! Houston 94% Denver 48% Jazz 36% Portland 22% Link: http://boards.go.com/cgi/espn/request.dll?MESSAGE&room=nba_uth&id=238894
Which means that Houston still has 6% not making playoff. It could happen, just like we could get Yao with 8%(? something like this) possibility.
Rockets just need 2 Wins(if get it from next 2 games)to be the 7 Seed. Rockets 45W,Nuggets MAX WIN=44=Jazz Blazers Max WIN=45
Quote means if Rockets get a Win from next 2 games. The MAGIC NUMBER IS 1 . Rockets MIN 45W >Blazer MAX WIN=45W either Jazz or Nuggets 's MAX Win=44W
