I guess this guy is getting a multimillion dollar settlement. I guess a brown dude in the neighborhood is too suspicious for the neighbors.

As in any case, we need all the facts. Jumping to a conclusion like "I guess the brown dude is too suspicious" could be premature. Some folks on this board WANT that to be the narrative, but I'd prefer to see all the facts.

Native Americans were here first and deserve to be treated with respect and dignity.

There seems to be a lack of training taking place with this department.

    1. Didn't speak English

    2. Didn't understand English thus couldn't obey commands

    3. Allegedly behaving in a suspicious manner

    4. New to the country so he is unfamiliar with the customs of our culture

    5. Well-to-do Alabama suburb

It is easy to see why he was arrested. As for the amount of force used, we'll find out once the tape is released.

Based on your above 5 points, I don't see why he was "arrested" (which he never was)... and if these are the only reasons it takes to be harassed by police, then you're pretty much highlighting the biggest problems people have with cops today.

True, he wasn't arrested, but he did end up on the ground because he couldn't understand/obey orders and he (allegedly) put his hands in his pockets.

Of course they were inexcusably overaggressive, but the initial circumstances justified engagement.

What should they have done differently?

How about not harass or even question an old man taking a walk in his son's neighboorhood... which is exactly what he was doing.

If you think police engagement is "justified" for circumstances such as this, we have a very different view on what the police is ultimately supposed to do for society (at least for one that is not nazi germany).

So do they ignore the call of a suspicious person? Maybe so. Just don't respond to "suspicious person" calls.

How is it that the hospital is able to find and contact his son, but the police aren't?

Who's to say the person who called is qualified to know what is suspicious and what is not suspicious... At least he didn't get murdered like Martin so he can be thankful for that.

An old brown man is a suspicious person?

The police should be better than that... and if they can't decipher what is or isn't suspicious, and simply takes whatever call they get as an opportunity to be "police" men and do "police" things, then there needs to be a better training system and better standards/guidelines/oversight for the entire industry.

Are there national guidelines/national governing bodies for police officers? There seems to be organizations such as that in place for every other profession that involves the lives of people.... mainly to protect the PEOPLE they serve (not the profession itself).

Why does everyone always try to dumb everything down...or maybe just uninterested in the details because it is too much trouble.

A call was made that a person was walking along the street looking into garages. That is the call the police received. I'm sure the policy is to respond to suspicious person calls. Maybe it shouldn't be...even if it is something somewhat suspicious (looking into garages, backyards, windows, etc.)

per the article there's video and audio of the incident that hasn't yet been released. So I guess it will come out at trial.

I fully accept that the lawyer is likely embellishing for effect, but from what's been presented so far I can't see how wrestling the man to the ground was in any way warranted.

Exactly...so your position is to assume the person is not qualified to know?
