I'm a huge NBA/Rocket fan but football has always been a second love to me. I just can't play Madden too well.

Assuming we all use the Texans playbook, can any Madden expert recommend the best plays for the following scenarios?

    On Offense:

    1) Short yard -

    Running:

    Passing:

    2) Medium yardarge (5 yards) -

    Running:

    Passing:

    3) Long yardage (10 or more)

    Passing:

    On Defense -

    1) Short yardage (stopping run)

    2) Medium yardage (stopping run or pass)

    3) Long yardage (stopping pass)

    Anyone? Much Thanks!

My offense is great on Madden. Basically for passing just sit in the pocket and be patient. Look to your running backs and Tight Ends the most. Run slant routes too. Going deep is difficult for me on Madden this year. Usually my QB overthrows.

Running the ball. Most people say don't hit the sprint button until you find a hole, well I start out with the sprint button and I have been successful running the ball.

    Defense - I can't help you, I'm hopeless.

Thanks man. I will just have to tinker around with the play books. I need to learn how to use the zone blitz and bit more effectively on certain downs.

Some tips I'd like to share with newcomers or casual players.

Running: Use the sprint button only when you see a hole and want to zip through it. Otherwise let the blockers set up the play for you then execute your cut or juke move. Also switch to your lead blocker before the snap because setting the block manually can be the difference between a loss of yards and a huge gain. The CPU sucks at blocking down the field or corners coming on blitz. In a real game given the choice of blocking the LB or the CB, most blocker would go for the CB knowing a fast RB like Slaton can easily outrun the slower LBs. Another factor is the CPU will often try to block defenders that are already out of position to make a play thus always leaving the safeties open to make the tackle. Now on sweep and outside pitch plays I always set the block myself.

Passing: Do not pass the ball deep every time or your will get intercepted. The safeties are now pretty smart at getting back in position because the throw motion takes time and if your QB gets hit while throwing then the ball will sail on you. Use the flats whenever you can. I usually put a hot route for my RB on many plays to the flat. The CPU is very weak at defending that part of field especially if they are playing deep zone with no coverage underneath. This can be an easy 10-15 yard gain every time. Another method I employ, is to control a receiver pre snap and run my own route. This is hard and takes time to perfect but a high awareness QB like Brady or Manning will recognize that you are open and will get you the ball quickly. I run this on long yardage situation or when I get a great read on the defensive coverage. Give me man coverage with deep zone and I will run a slant to the middle of the field for an easy 15 yard pickup.

Defense: Ok many players even expert don't know the "click off" strategy. This is done when you switch to the closest defender after a pass is thrown, now the goal is to put the player in good position to make the play and then switch off to the next closest player. Why do this? Well the CPU is much better at making interceptions or tackles once the player has good position. Also if you miss the ball or tackle with the first defender then you still control a secondary player to make sure the CPU player is brought to the ground. This is really excellent way of getting gang tackles on RBs or swarming a receiver who looked to be open when the ball was lobed his way. Learn to do this and you will spend less time screaming at your players for missing the hit or ints.

Great stuff. Learning to manually block sounds like another step to learn for me. Thanks for the expert insight.

So how does the game play on default sliders? I really hate having to tinker with sliders, but I guess it's almost a requirement in sports games these days.

totally agree. i havent bought a madden since the 90's, mainly because they started to become to complicated and in depth for me lol. the slider stuff annoys me with just about every sports game now a days though.

Who is Shuab? Seriously though, I'm glad they updated him. Does anyone know how often they will be doing these updates?

    Another small tip:

When you are playing at all madden level against a top rated QB like Brady or Manning, have several coverage audibles ready and use them often. For example, Manning likes to motion his receivers pre snap, this can give away your coverage. He will recognize man coverage so fool him with a zone audible while you shift DB with receiver in motion. This will give the false impression of man coverage while you just audibled zone.

FREE DLC legacy pack for PS3 owners. Looks pretty cool, and you can *sigh* play as the oilers as well as all the other 7 AFL teams including the original Texans. It also displays the game in the vintage grain fashion and old school ref uniforms too. Just sign up at the link and after you submit it immediately gives you a redemption code for use in PSN. I have my code but haven't tried it bc the game's on. GO TEXANS!

The constant touchdown-deciding cut-scenes are starting to piss me off.

Anyone through the Madden Moments yet?

I'm stuck with the Lions having to come back from 8 points down right now. :(

    Newb question of the day...

...how do you change from regular field goal return to onside kick return?

It's gotta be simple, I just don't know the button (and can't find it in the manual).

    YAH YAH Moes!

Against the Redskins! I can't pass it!

It's kind of ironic since the Redskins lost last week to the Lions.

I tied the game with no time left on a Stafford Sneak, then I got the 2 pointer to send it into OT...

I win the kickoff, first pass I throw is picked off, I mean it was an easy pass on a comeback route, 5 yards away and it just flew right to the LB... LB FUMBLES the ball and I Recover it... I have 3 Mother****ing guys fall on it and it pulls up that stupid "Press X Repeatedly" and I lose possesion, Redskins kick FG and WIN
