Read the Sig.......I am trying to delude myself. I absolutely HATE losing to the Soonerz (serenity now...serenity now)
I am not ready to make a prediction, but there once was a small man at Texas that OWNED OU (Pete Gardere). When I think OU for the last 3 years, the one thing that stood out most in my mind was this little man that was once there that OWNED us, and now he is gone (good riddance Quentin Griffin).
Agreed. Another reason why Simms doesn't really deserve ALL the blame... What big game has UT been able to run the ball well? UT's hogs up front on both sides of the ball always look exhausted against OU in the last few years. Perhaps Maddog should whip them into better shape.
You do realize it was a preseason game against 2nd and 3rd stringers. Simms was the one throwing the ints, not Brown or Davis. Simms' weaknesses may have limited their choice of plays. Or perhaps Bomar looked at the UT QB depth chart.
I agree Simms doesn't deserve all the blame (he doesn't play defense), but he gets put under the spotlight as leader of the offense.
You mean the same depth chart that only has Vincent Young as a potential roadblock? UT didn't sign a QB last year, OU signed Tommy Grady last year. If you think Bomar going to OU had to do with the depth chart, then I don't know if you really follow recruiting.
When you have unimaginative playcalling, that is when a QB racks up INTs. It also doesn't help that the running game is putrid in big games, forcing Simms to throw in obvious pass situations (3rd and long). If Simms were allowed to pass in situations like 2nd and 2, then his INTs would be reduced 10-fold. I do admit that Simms obviously has some sort of mental block when he played in the big games. However, that same thing can be said for the coaching staff, who routinely gets outcoached/outprepared in the major games. Bull Reese might be the most overrated defensive coordinator in the game. At least UT resolved 1 of their problems by getting rid of Nunez.
I don't follow recruiting so Simms perceived misuse may have cost us Bomar but I don't believe it will stop us (Brown) from signing other stud QB's in the future.
More than likely not. I never said it would. I was just saying that I believe (just a hunch) that Bomar would be UT bound, had the Simms experiment panned out. UT's depth chart at QB was the main reason FOR Bomar to pick UT over OU.
On the Bomar/QB depth chart issue: Vince is the name and pimary worry, and oh yeah, he is a freshman. The guiy who is ahead of him on the depth chart, well thus far he has beaten out Vince for the starting spot. So he was looking at being 3rd string behind a Jr and a freshman, he made a good move.
3rd string behind a senior and sophomore. Could've redshirted, and started 2 years after Young left....
OU was Bomar's 1st choice all along. Tommy Grady may never see the field because of academic reasons, Brent Rawls is in Stoops' doghouse, and Paul Thompson is a mediocre talent. Noah Allen is nothing special, much like a Matt Nordgren. The only reason why I question Bomar's decision is because OU does not run a pro-style offense. Just about 90% of their snaps are taken out of the shotgun, and involve lots of gimmicky college plays, which aren't always the best way to raise a QB. But apparently Bomar is a badass and will start for the Sooners by his sophomore season.
But, I guess Bomar will start for OU in 2004....? Fact is that UT did not sign a QB last year, which was Mack's plan to lure Bomar. 2 years is quite a big gap for a top-shelf program like UT. There are not many elite level programs that Bomar could have committed to, and become a starter or 2nd string after 1 year. OU signed the #2 QB in the nation in 2003. Here is what the depth chart would look like in 2004 for UT and OU. UT- Mock VY Nordgren (who didn't play a down in 2002) Bomar OU- Rawls (if he doesn't xfer) Thompson Allen Grady Bomar
Now that they have a real QB in Bomar, maybe OU won't resort to their gimmicky offense. I do wonder what Bomar thinks of OU's system. Perhaps the OU coaches told him they'd shift to a more pro-style offense over time.
