battery life has always been the big problem with the macbooks, along with battery temperature... I'm on my 4th battery now after Apple has replaced mine over and over from a 2006 model macbookpro.
I have 15 inch Mac Book Pro (early 2009). I take 3 1/2 hour plane rides all the time and my battery last the entire trip with about an hour left. I turn off wifi on the plane and go half screen bright (screen still bright) or so. turn off the backlight on keyboard. I have gotten 3 1/2 to 4 hours with wifi on. The current 15 inch Mac Book Pros are rated to last about an hour longer than mine.
Thanks. I won't be traveling much with this laptop, so weight is not an issue (the 15 inch is as heavy as my Dell). But I won't need a big screen either, as I will be connecting it to my Samsung monitor. So now it's down to price and specs. - I convert many photos from raw to jpegs, which is a drag on Dell. I'll check them out at a local store to see if I can a 13 inch with better specs. One more question, will there be any problem playing Windows media files? I've read that there's a freeware, but regardless, there's a lot of problems with WMV on Mac.
Flip4Mac works great: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/flip4macwindowsmediacomponentsforquicktime.html
13" MBP weighs 4.5 lbs. 15" weighs 5.5 lbs. The weights and measures are up on apple.com Only DRM protected WMVs, something rarely used. Flip4Mac, Perian, and VLC Media Player work with any other filetype I've ever tried -- .wmv, .mkv, .avi, etc.
For the price a 4.5 lb laptop is pretty normal.... especially considering it's made of aluminum.. If you go below about 3.5 lbs.. you'll be paying upwards of 2-3 grand. Most 15" are around 5 lbs and 6 lbs... so again that's pretty normal. I think it would weigh less though without the Aluminum. But hey, like I've said.. the aluminum shell is like a protection for the laptop... I don't know why people said it can be easily dented.. mine isn't dented and I've had a couple of mishaps with it... so I mean it's very durable also.
well... i bought a MBP today, pretty sweet. Whoever said the aluminum is weak probably hasn't used a macbook. Its very sturdy. Thanks for the advice, guys. I think what im most surprised by is GarageBand... that thing is friggin cool.
Did you get the 13.3" or the 15". I am heading to the Galleria now and still trying to decide. I think I'll go with the 13.3" and then buy a 24" 1080P LCD monitor for $200 - which is the price difference b/t the 13.3" and the 15"
i bought the 13.3". I briefly considered the 15, but after picking it up and stuff, I decided the larger screen wasn't worth the weight.

Ahh, a Thinkpad snob. That explains the hateraid. Too bad my T43 died after 18 months of use. I replaced it with the original Macbook that cost half what it did and has lasted twice as long.
I'm not hating on the MacBook, just think it is heavy and stepped in to talk about the aluminum manufacturing process. I just got my third TP so I wanted to comment on the guy saying it cost 2-3K to get a 3 pound lapper. Mine is just under 3 pounds I think. Or just over with the optical drive, cannot remember. Also considering you work at a apple store please save the hating and the "snob" comments. Mac users are the biggest snobs ever.
You came in here to tell us why Macbooks are inferior to your computer. Good job. Mac fanboys and anti-Mac trolls are one and the same.
