Faos - I think you're okay on this; my father in law is running it on that configuration. Imovie is just a totally different program; the compression is weirdly good, it takes a while to get the hang of but it is cool. I actually really liked the old iMovie, there must be some reason they're not giving for the switch - something is coming, perhaps. Anyway, pls. post if your maching takes iMovie, i bet it does and i bet it works fine.
I don't care about specific extensions other than the browser needs to support what the majority of the Web may be written/produced in at any given time. If it uses 1k of RAM and takes the dog for a walk for you wouldn't make me switch if half the pages I go to get rendered incorrectly/screwy. I'll look into it when I get the chance, though. Thanks!
Okay, so this is going to sound like a really stupid question. I bought my first MacBook today. I LOVE it! However, it came with Vista. So how do I install Vista so I can use the dual boot feature? Is there some trick? I can run it through Fusion (although it's only a trial version).
hey guys, bringing back on old thread as this seems to be one of the better mac threads out there couple of questions, my pc is getting old and the hard drive drive, looking at a big upgrade or new one and also considering the imac, have used a mac before so love the operating system and my brother just bought a 24 inch imac and love the look and feel of it 1. what do people think of the 24 inch imacs and particularly the processor speed hard drive space ram video card and wondering if base model is the go or if it is worth upgrading some of these items, personally think 2 gig of ram is a minimum and maybe the video card upgrade help
What will you be using it for? Macs are still not 'ideal' if you want a gaming machine. For just about everything else (unless you are running some specific software) works fine. The stock iMac specs are solid. The machine runs very smoothly, particularly the 24inch models. (As I understand it, they also have better displays). I would look into increasing RAM, however. You don't have to go with what they offer in the Apple store and it's generally recommended you don't. You can find better prices on the memory and it will work fine.
Jeff -- why on earth are you using MS Word? Doesn't that sort of defeat the whole purpose of getting a Mac? OpenOffice is pretty much the same... better in some ways, not to mention free, and non-Microsoft.
Smeg, big question is what'll you be using it for? If price and older video card (gaming/HD video editing) aren't an issue, then iMac all the way. Otherwise, you may want to consider a Windows/*nix-basd computer. Going down your list: CPU: These are sufficiently fast nowadays and should not be used to justify going faster in speed or higher in price. The lowest speed is plenty good. RAM: Definitely go with 2 GB. You can upgrade beyond that on your own for much cheaper. Hard drive: Depends on what you're doing. Videos (vid editing, downloadeding TV shows and movies) can take up quite a bit of space fast. Music and pics almost as much depending on the person. This really is a personal preference so only you can say how much you'll need. At least 320 GB, if not 500 GB for slightly above average use is my recommendation. Video card: This is where you kinda get taken on the iMac if video is important to you (e.g. HD vid editing or gaming). Currently, they're 2 generations behind, yet you're still paying a premium. For the same price if not cheaper, you could get the latest and greatest on the non-Apple offerings. That said, for all other uses, the video card definitely works well. You will not be able to easily upgrade this on your own on the iMac, since the hardware is more similar to a laptop than a desktop. A few other things to keep in mind depending on your purchase timeframe: the iMac was updated back in April, so expect another update around the same time next year. OS X v10.5 (Leopard) has been out since last year, and will be updated to v10.6 (Snow Leopard) some time next year but not expected to have any giant updates that are must-haves. These aren't big deals since things are updated all the time, but always nice to know what's coming up. One final thing: new Apple laptops coming out today, so you may consider replacing your desktop w/ a laptop, and then hookup to a LCD if need be.
Geeze, Im pretty bummed. My gf just got me a Macbook for my bday late Sept., and Im sure she bought it a bit more than 14 days ago. Any chance Apple bends the rules on their 14 day return/exchange policy?
Apple is actually pretty good about this, if they won't let you return it they may still give you some money back or something. It won't hurt to ask, worst case scenario is they don't do anything.
The new ones aren't a vast improvement over what you already have, most likely. I'll be getting one (my first Apple computer) but I wouldn't be upset if I had recently purchased one, either.
Thanks for the input, I am going to try to exchange it tomorrow. She bought it exactly 3 weeks ago. Happy Birthday! You have really heard of them giving people some money back?!? UPDATE!! You were right they said as long as it is less than a month I could return it! YIPPIE!
thanks for this response and Rokkit won't be using it for games, if somehow i find the time for game again in the future will go the ps3 option anyway have used a mac before and love the OS, and the new imac certainly have a great look and make for a great piece of furniture, the 24inch is awesome, certainly want to get the 2 gig and probably 500 gig hard drive, but may just but a 1 terrabyte external down the track.... whilst the ram is upgradable the difficulty in upgrading the cpu and video card make me think the 3ghtz and top of the line video card is the way to, whilst games are not a big thing, may want to do some video capture, anyone know if this is possible thanks
Who did you talk to about this? I bought a macbook 16 days ago and just found out they were coming out with a new one earlier today. What did they tell you that you need to do?
Not sure what you mean exactly by "video capture." - If from a video camera, all you need to do is use a FireWire cable and its very straight forward to download, edit, and produce your own movies using iMovie. - If you want to grab TV shows over the air or from cable, you can purchase a TV tuner USB stick. Just plug it into the iMac, and there'll be a coax jack on the other end so you can hook up an antenna or your cable feed directly to it. Using the TV tuner's included software, you can watch and record to your heart's content. - For any other source, you'll need to purchase the appropriate adapter to hook it up to iMac and for the most part iMovie should be able to grab it. Again, the CPU will not be your limiting factor for video in this situation, it will be your video card since it will be solely responsible for handling all video-related tasks. As said before, the iMac video options are 2 generations behind the latest cards on the market so performance will not be optimal for HD level video editing. Also note, there have been reports that certain nVidia parts from this generation are defective, so Apple, HP, etc. have been offering replacements. No word yet on whether this specifically affects the nVidia 8800 in the iMac, but thought you should know. That leaves the ATI 2600 which was a mid-level product when it came out. This may not be a big issue depending on the type of video you wish to mess with.
I called the store where I bought it from and told them my story. The salesman said as long as it has been less than one month I could exchange it. I brought everything up to the store last night in pristine condition, re-packaged just like it came. But he didnt even look at it! I suppose if it was messed up or missing anything they did have a CC# on file He offered me $400 back or a full refund on a gift card. $400 was tempting, but I now have a gift card burning a hole in my pocket until the new macbooks come in. It seems no stores know when they will get them, although I do recall at the conference they mentioned they shipped yesterday, and some stores would get them as soon as today!
I ordered my macbook online yesterday around 4 PM and it arrived at my doorstep at noon today. Too bad I have class until 5:30.
My last mac died all of a sudden - logicboard failure. So I got another one - mac mini this time. Two months in, it started making this annoying chirping noise as if there's a nest of baby chicks inside the box. Noise has still been going on for a few weeks now.
