One of the best shows I've photographed this year. Given the opportunity to shoot these guys every night, I would. First you take their celestial name and combine it with their spacey music which all melds in an ethereal live show that combines a starlit background, various spots and large light tubes on stage. The combination of all these things makes for some dreamy photos. Equipment: Canon 5D, Canon 5D Mark II, 70-200mm, 24-70mm, 17-35mm More photos on my Flickr 1. Great pictures rockHEAD! Did anyone go to this show and the one a few months ago at Warehouse? A fully exhaustive comparative review would be appreciated... or you can just tell me that the Warehouse show was way better! Then, I can feel good about my decision to skip out on this show. I actually like it when bands tour a couple times on each album, but I wish M83 had let a bit more time pass before he came through again. It was a little too soon for me to fork out more dough for another show...
I was at both and can honestly say HOB was better than Warehouse, but neither was as intense as their Coachella set (watched on livestream). They seem to do better with larger stages since they get plenty of room to awkwardly flail about and do their thing. Two more opportunities to catch them in October later this year. ACL & the former Verizon Theater, although the sound is somewhat awful at Verizon. Also, hey Eric/Groovehouse. Nice pics! -Julian
I saw M83 on their earlier tour, and they really cranked up the volume at the live show. The bass become too uncomfortable and I left early even despite standing in the back of the venue and having earplugs. I had seen them before at Webster Hall in NYC in 2008 and it wasn't too loud. Not sure why they feel the need to blast the volume at their live shows when especially their studio albums are considered borderline ambient electronica. I like the band's albums, but I don't think I'll be seeing them live again.
Only reason I know about M83 is because of that Victoria Secret commercial with their song "Midnight City" in the background. Song is jammin' by the way; four stars on my ipod.
I liked their last album, Saturdays=Youth, a lot better than this new one even though this new album has been more critically acclaimed.
In all fairness, Midnight City is his best pop song. Sounds cliche but I like the old stuff the best, I was going to make a list but it was going to come off in chronological order.
I agree with you! Midnight City is such a good song I was hoping the the rest of the album would fall in line; I was also left disappointed.
Just caught 'em at Stubbs in Austin. Best show I've been to in years! Can't wait to see them again at ACL
