I hope I'm right as well... as long as it improves the team.
Can anyone else remember CD ever making any comments remotely similar to this one? That the Luxury Tax wasn't an issue this offseason? (or any season, for that matter) It's just very out of character for him. It's not unusual for him to say things to muddle things or throw people off the scent of what they might be trying to do... far from it. But this is different.

Any hints as to what they're thinking from our insiders? Are you guys on vacation? ;)

    Doc Rocket?!? :(

I'm calling out to the Rocket deity!!!!!!

Why are they goin to deal Boki????

Posey plays 36 minutes a game.....24 minutes at small forward and 12 at shooting guard.
That gives Boki a chance to play 24 minutes at small forward.
Mobley can play 36 minutes a game..
Francis plays 36 minutes a game.
Moochie or another guy plays 12 minutes as backup point.
Eddie and Mo split 48 minutes at power forward.
    Yao Ming plays 30 minutes.....Cato plays 18. Or 36-12.

What I hope is......Griffin and Mobley are gone and Elton Brand is here!

Ditto. You people annoyed me to death saying we were going to end up with Dunleavy because Les was too cheap an owner to pay for Van Gundy. Well, they got Van Gundy, and for $4.5 million a season, and now they are thumbing their noses at the luxury tax too. Yeah, he sounds like a real tightwad.

Well, I hate to throw his name out there, but Clutch's sources were saying we lost Brown over $$$. To me, it didn't make sense. Seemed Les needs to throw some money around to improve this team and get people excited as we head into the new arena.

    Good news. though.

Does this mean that we might sign Elton Brand to a huge offer sheet and hope the Clips don't match it?

maybe it just means that whatever deals CD has lined up it won't make the rockets go into the Luxury Tax threshold and not necessarily breaking the bank to make this team better...c'mon guys you can't expect Les to turn into the Maloofs or Cuban overnight just because he wants to make a 'big splash'.

By "huge" do you mean the 4.5 mill exception?

I haven't forgotten that, nor do I disbelieve it. I do think people ran too far with it though. People heard that and thought, the Rockets don't want to pay what Brown is worth. I think the reality might be that the Rockets thought, "he's a good coach, but he's not that good!" That is, they were being efficient, not miserly.

But, imo folks are right when they say they don't believe Les doesn't care about the luxury tax. My theory is that he's thinking they can go over the threshold as long as the expiration of Rice's contract brings them back under again next offseason.

    Ditto.

I was especially getting annoyed with people saying we wouldn't resign Posey on the basis of a 3-4 year old quote, tha was made by Les Alexander right whe luxury tax first became a league issue.

Les has always forked over the dollars when he thought it'd help the team. This past year was the first one in awhile we weren't aggressive with the MCE; considering we had Yao Ming, Boki, and several guys coming back from injury (MoT, Francis),that's understandable.

By saying they are not thinking about the luxury tax this year, why does everyone seem to think that means trades? If we only sign Posey and release some with "NO" trades would we not have no reason to worry about the luxury tax?

My impression from reading CD's quote was that they were willing to go over the Luxury Tax threshold to get someone. To me, that's big news... considering the source.

I don't expect Les to ever be like Cuban, but I DO think he would make the sort of moves the Maloofs did given the right circumstances. And getting people to shell out for the high dollar seats in the new arena is a "special circumstance", in my opinion.

It's not making a move to get the team that extra nudge to try to get to the Finals (ala Maloofs), but getting the new arena off to a good $$$ start could very well be cause to "make a splash" of some kind. If we don't, I'll be the first to say I was wrong. I hope I'm not. ;)

If a team like La Lakers won't pay for going over the tax threshold, I'm not sure les will either. Les is not a bottom line owner like Drayton, but he doesn't want to pay double for going over the luxury tax, plus you don't get the money from the teams that are over the luxury tax.

kidrock8, why are you such a d... oh wait. already been asked...

seriously tho, a lot of you guys are jumping the gun a bit with the trade ideas.. first off, don't you have to have the values of contracts to be within 15% of each other when trading players? well, i guess if we're talking a $20 million contract, that's $3 million significant...

but.. for all we know, the luxury tax might not be an issue because the rockets won't sign a free agent (sorry for the pessimism :( ). if they just work trades and keep the contracts close to each other in value, of course the luxury tax won't be an issue.

no, i didn't hear how CD said it on 610... but please, let's not get into the speculate-about-anything threads based on what CD said. at least wait and see if anything big goes down on draft night! after signing much of the bench to mucho dinero over the past few seasons and since he promised playoffs last year, grain of salt CD.. that's my advice

I hope the don't over pay Posey, the Rockets all ready of Taylor, Cato, and Moochie who are over paid. If POsey wants too much money let him walk, because he is not that good.

That's pretty much what I was thinking. While I was hoping the Rockets wouldn't screw up and get cheap, hiring an asst coach as the new head coach, something did tell me that Les should know, of all people, that you gotta spend $$$ with the new arena on the way.

Which is why I think he'll delve into trades/free agency etc. Many people with money already attend the Texans games.
