I just don't understand why people like that place (JCI). What, 3 bucks for a hot dog? You do realize you can buy a pack of 8 of 'em for like 99 cents @ the grocery store, right?
Exactly, it isnt like their chili or cheese is all that. You can make the same crap at home for much less and probably better.
I saw this thread earlier and I thought well I haven't been there in a while and I remember it being okay so I'll stop by this evening. What happen to the place? The sauce was kind of sour, the fake onion loaf was dripping with grease, the baked potato wasn't fresh and what happened to the bar with the baked beans and potato salad, all it had was the toppings for the baked potato. Oh by the way Bacos suck!! I went to the one in Humble by Deerbrook.
I don't live there anymore. All I know is that my dad's work used to get Rib Tickler catered in every week. Ted Johnson of the New England Patriots' parents own the place. He knows his folks, and often joked about having them tell Ted to come to Houston.
I just might have to do that! Found out we will be doing Nasa & the San Jacinto Monument one day while they are here, so we just might have to squeeze in lunch at the Monument Inn also. I haven't been there since I was a little kid, but friends who have been there recently said it was as good as ever.
RMT, I went about 6 months ago to the Monument Inn....and as near as I can tell...its as good as ever.. still a bit pricey for what you get...and the scenery leaves much to be desired....but the food is still good.
I grew up in Deer Park right near the Monument Inn, we still go there every year for Mothers Day. The food is pretty good, but I think there are better restaurants over there. If you want some good Mexican you should go check out Border Grill & Cantina which is in Pasadena on Spencer Hwy (about 10 mins from the monument.). There's also a great family owned italian place on Center St in Deer Park called Antonio's.
Didn't all the other old-time restaurants in the area (like Jimmie Walkers, etc.) close down years ago, and the Monument Inn is the only one left? It's been a loooong time since I have been out to the monument. Perhaps Sudies Catfish House instead? My friends are from California and they want to be immersed in Houston style Texana.
I'd have to agree here. It's all about paper plates and picnic tables. Wasn't it recently voted as one of the best in the state if not THE best? As far as Houston goes, I'd have to go with Carls out 290 near Cy Farm...er, Cy Fair high school. Only complaint is that they're closed on Sundays.
The best BBQ Ive ever had was in Elgin, TX. God Bless Southside Market and their fantastic sausage!!! YUM!
Ever been to the Coupland Inn near Elgin? I used to hit that place with a group of buddies while I was at UT. They just renovated it...looks just as fun as it always has! www.couplanddancehall.com
I only eat ribs dry. No sauce for me please. I agree Williams has the best ribs in the city. Pizzatolas has some great ribs also. Nice pepper rub. I just tried Carls on 290 since I moved out to cypress and was pleased with their ribs. They have them on the buffet at Carls back porch on grant and for 7-8 bucks they are losing money when I stop in to eat. Last time I had Luthers I was disappointed. Out of town I'd say Coopers BBQ in Llano is one of the best bbq places I've ever been to. I think I'll head to Williams in an hour to get a lb of ribs.
thats the only way to do them....if you need to bury your ribs under a load of sauce, then you arent doing them right. Slow smoking with pecan or hickory for about 4 hours at 250 makes them so tasty and juicy that putting sauce on them would be a traveshamockery. When I go out for babybacks at Outback(sorry Smeg), I always order them without sauce...they are fantastic without it.
Yeah Monument is the only thing out there now. Don't get me wrong, the food is good and certainly worth trying. I've never been a big fan of Sudies, but Don'Key is just down the street from Sudies and they have some killer Donkeyritas!
You should be ashamed of yourself. Drewdog, great call on Elgin sausage. A couple of folks down at Surfside recently gave us some "Pittsburg Hot Links" off their grill after we got their truck unstuck. Best freaking sausage/hot dog I've ever tasted. Unfortunately, Pittsburg, TX, is in the middle of nowhere up by Longview.
