This place is money. Its so good. I used to go their every Thursday for lunch. Its worth a try for sure and also they do take out. Nothing like a rack of ribs and T-Mac going off.
Do they have Rudy's in Houston now? I know they have one in College Station and Waco. The gas station concept bothers me a little bit, but the food is good.
Their spanikopita are really good. Mousaka is good. I really like the Chicken souvlaki sandwich. You can get a spanikopita combo with greek salad, or the chicken souvlaki sandwich comes with fries.
Best bbq I ever had was at Porter House Cafe in Cambridge, MA. They had Texas, Memphis, and NC bbq. All done very well. Their chilis also kicked *ss. Second best bbq was Salt Lick, near Austin. They have a killer sauce.
Would Niko Niko's count as a Houston must-do? I know the type of food doesn't necessarily represent Houston but it's good and you get a lot of it. Another place you may want to try (but it's very expensive) is Fogo de Chao. That seems to be the place to take out-of-town guests.
Everybody's talking about the famous joints, but what are your favorite Mom and Pops? My family has been going to this place called Hickory Barn BBQ on Wilcrest and West Belfort for over 15 years. Damn, I love that place.
Niko Niko's might qualify. We will certainly be in that part of the city enough times to go there. Fogo de Chao is a chain, so I wouldn't classify it as must do, but thanks for the suggestions and keep 'em coming!
I like Rudys, but what's up with the sauce? Anyone else turned off by room temp sauce? I like the taste of all thier sauces, but gotta go for the hot BBQ Sauces on meat...
They definitely should be in Houston. I mean they're also in San Antonio and 3 Austin locations as well.
In honor of this thread, I dragged some buddies to Luling City Market for lunch today. Didn't get a rib, but I got reacquainted with the sausage link as a side to my brisket. Damn, I could use a good nap.
i've eaten there many times, my aunt and uncle live in fort bend. also, for any of you from alief, there is a place called sally joe's, on boone and bellaire, that's been around forever.
Do you like their BBQ? I think their ribs stink, and their brisket is marginal. Luling City Market is never high on my list of BBQ places to visit. Now, the real Market, in the town of Luling, that's another story!!!!
It's close to where I work. So it has that going for it. Which is nice. Yeah, the brisket doesn't really do much for me. Needs a smokier flavor. I am a fan of their ribs, however. It's hard for me to meet a rib I don't like though. I didn't have one today. I had a sausage link instead. The sausage is growing on me. At first I didn't like it but I'm coming around. The surprise on the menu is the half chicken. Has a nice smokey (oakey) flavor. And I like their (mustard-based) sauce. Not too sweet like many out there. Not hot enough, but that can be fixed with a little hot sauce in the mix. Overall I think it's good, not great. Better than Luthers, sure. But definitely not Goode Co. And DEFINITELY not Rudy's. Hey, do you Rudy's fans prefer the sauce or the "sissy" sauce? I only found the sissy sauce @ the Rudy's in New Braunsfels. It has a yellow label. I compared the ingredients to the regular sauce. Seems very similar ... except the sissy sauce doesn't have anchovies. There's anchovies in bbq sauce?!? WTF?
Oh snap, I haven't been to Sally Joe's in years. It literally is a hole in the wall. I'm amazed that they have survived as long as they have. Every restaurant on bellaire near that area is vietnamese. I've lived in that part of town in 3 different houses for the past 17 years or so and it's been amazing to watch that area turn into, well I call it "Viet-Town" because I can't think of something cooler, but I'm sure there is an "official" name ala "China Town" for it. They just erected a nice War Memorial for the ARVN veterans and had the unveiling this weekend in the plaza accross from HKC Mall.
mc is right, Zion baptist in Huntsville is the best I've ever had. I remember discussing that with Max on here not too long ago. There's also anchovies in Worcestershire sauce.
I've had Drexler BBQ's ribs. I thought they were very above average. And Luther's has the crappiest ribs I've ever eaten in Houston.
I was jsut going to say the same thing. There used to be a place in Spring called "The Feed Store." It was cafeteria style bbq. That place was great. Rudy's beats Luther's by far.
