I never ate at Luther's when I was in Houston. I always heard it was average at best. They have/had Colter's BBQ here in Dallas. I think they're the same thing because even their commercials sounded the same - same jingle, but with the name replaced. I think even their signs were similar. Never ate there either.
That's pretty bad, because I think Luther's has some of the worst bbq in town. Those onion loafs are pretty awesome though. I also don't get the fascination with Goode Company. I always hear how great it is, but I've tried it 4 or 5 times and I've just never been impressed. I put Pappas well above both Luthers and Goode Co.
Luther's is really average BBQ at best, but not bad if you are from out of town. What no mention of Sam's BBQ on Airline?!?!? That stuff is the shiznit! Also a big fan of County Line and Goode Co.
I try to go once every time they announce their all-you-can-eat ribs special. I like ribs. But yeah, they're kinda run-of-the-mill if you asked me.
I had Luther's BBQ at a Texans game last year. I even had Luther??? (Fat guy from the commercial) take my order. It was ok, not great, but decent food.
I've had that pork in vinigar BBQ in Atlanta one time and it was awful! Terrible. I couldn't stand it! I don't know what people in the East are thinking but whatever that stuff is they call BBQ is NOT BBQ.
It's a old place in Katy been there for about 20 years, best BBQ I've ever had.. It makes Thelmas taste like a Gas Station hotdog Yeah, I said it... Sorry for the spelling, it's really called Nonmacher's..
No doubt. I consider myself very fortunate to have Rudy's in Albuquerque. Only a mile away to boot. If they could do Luther's onion loaf, I'd be in heaven.
RM Tex: I'll second William's Smokehouse. Damn good place. Order the ribs "dry" there. Even better without the sauce. And give Drexler's ribs a try. They're damn good, also, contrary to most people's opinions about the place.
Yup, I always get the sauce on the side. Gonna be there weekend after July 4th cause I got some friends from LA coming in town and they want to experience things like the locals. So....Williams Brothers, Ragin Cajun, Ninfa's on Navigation, West Alabama Icehouse, Kay's Lounge, Blanco's...anybody got some more Houston must-do's?
A couple of things... I agree that Luther's is not the best. I said that in my original post. But it is above average for fast food. And it is absolutely great when you can get anything else 345 days out of the year. Also it is cheaper than Pappas, and a lot of other places. But it is still a chain restaurant, with a moderate price, and decent bbq especially compared to what folks outside of Texas think of as bbq. That was kind of the point I was hoping to make. What is average bbq to people in Texas is absolutely far above anything that can be had in most other places. So appreciate what you have. I would kill for Luther's right now. I would go an a rampage for some of the other places mentioned in this thread. But for cheap fast food chain Luther's still has good food. Maybe I'm just a little homesick.
You know, nobody outside of Texas realizes this, but the barbeque-stuffed brisket baked potato is pretty much a Texas-only tradition, and they are awesome, and inexpensive. Typically $5-6 bucks. Two great places are in Bellaire: One on the corner of Rice and Bissonnet, and the other a block west on Bissonnet next to Roadhouse grill. You might want to try those.
Oh Yes. Been to both. I like Brisket BBQ (the one next to Roadster Grille) a little better than the place on the corner, but both are good in a pinch. Have you been to Roadster Grille? Great burgers and Greek food. I'm there for lunch quite a bit on Fridays.
I've been there a couple of times. Wasn't real impressed. To me Bellaire Broiler burger next door has far superior burgers. I have heard they have great wings, though. I just haven't tried them. What greek food would you suggest I try there?
