So i guess then you would be for putting an end to the Head-as-PG experiment? I'm not sold on it either. He has looked terrible out there, and I'm concerned it's affecting other parts of his game. But IMO it makes sense to at least try him out at this point in the season. Admittedly, point guard instincts are not easy to develop, but it's not like the Rockets are asking for him to suddenly be the main distributor for the team. I think the most the Rockets expect out of him is to take some pressure off T-Mac by sharing the ball-handling duties. If he can't do it, then I think it's going to hard for him to find minutes in the fourth quarter in the playoffs.
Luther can flat out shoot the ball. This alone will assure him a long career, and him being a good pick where we got him. For those that think that Luther has some kind of mental deficiency, you must remember what has been mentioned earlier. The guy is thinking way too much out there because of having to play the 1.Head's not getting to flow naturally at the 2.He's a wing player and a key component on championship teams at every level.Luther plays team ball and is more than capable of at least filling a "role". Watch him play the 2 as his career progresses.I'd imagine his defense(esp. team) and ability to get to the hoop should prove gaining assets. Head already has a top notch skillset and it wouldn 't surprise me if he expands his game.
Luther has steadily developed into a really good reserve guard. Alot of people tend to forget that he is only in his second year, and only now is running point a bit. Give him a little time and he'll round in to a pretty nice comboguard. Another thing is that we all have been watching play point without Yao around. Playing point becomes alot easier when your job consist of bringing the ball up, giving to a wing, and spotting up behind the three point line waiting to see if the other team doubles down.
Last night he had two wide opens shots at the top of the key created by Yao and he passed them up to drive in the lane. He is overthinking and making what should be a simple play for a 43% 3-point shooter much harder. He just needs to calm down, stop paralyzing himself with the thought of creating off the dribble for others and play basketball. Also from what I've seen, passes to the wings from dribble penetration is not a strength of his right now. So if they run at him from the top of the key and force him to put it on the floor, he should penetrate with scoring in mind and pass, only if they cut him off, to a player in the paint or a slasher not named Mutombo. Whatever he does, he needs to be decisive because his hesitation is causing alot of his troubles.
That's it. And shoot it until they push him off the 3 point line. And then it is time for him to head to the bench. Because he does nothing else even decent.
IIRC, Head demonstrated flashes of brilliance with his all-around performance during the stretch of TMac-absence in December. IMO, the problem is JVG overplays Head's weaker game, i.e., his ball handling and decision making, while under-utilizing his strength as a shooter. The mishandling of Rockets players by JVG is not limited to Head, unfortunately. Other examples include asking - VSpan to be a spot-up shooter, - Rafer to shoot more than he should have, - Novak to be a defender rather than a shooter, - JL3 to be a play maker, - Yao to chase guards around perimeter.
i along with alot of rockets fans i think have absolutely no confidence in Luther Head coming down the stretch. It is almost to the point where it is a auto turnover of terrible shot.
Its his passing that concerns me more than him bring the ball or anything else! if he improves his passing over time and reduce his TO then hes a good player!
Actually, Luther was fouled on that play. They knocked his arm and he lost the ball. He didn't hand the ball to the Cavs. That's what JVG was screaming about.
I agree 100%. Luther can't drive to the basket that much because he's way too short, and most of his shots get blocked. He sucks at handling the ball because he's never had to do it before. He's always been a confident guy, but playing the point just messes him up. Either way, I prefer a quiet guy to a loudmouth LeBron James type who stares down his own teammates after dunking. I mean, who does that?
He couldn't find anyone to give the ball to. Plain and simple. The Cavs had all our guys covered up, and he couldn't use our last timeout and put us in another Dallas situation.
