May I introduce another question? Which would be why is Mike Brown wasting his time playing an inexperienced rookie who can shoot like Gibson, with an effectiveness rating of a little above 5 when the average is 15, when he could have done like Jeff Van Gundy, an experienced nba coach, who kept Steve Novak glued to the f***** bench all year? Oh yeah, JVG is fired. Something has been wrong with personnel decisions and this team for the past 4 years. I hope they get better. Soon I will take the time to come up with a new sig. Maybe it will say something about Gibson.
Luther had a tough series against Utah, but he wasn't the only one. He hit a lot of big shots last year. That being said, everyone could use more Booby ! DD
Because the Cavaliers didn't suck with Gibson in there http://www.82games.com/0607/06CLE1D.HTM And the Rockets did suck with Novak in there http://www.82games.com/0607/06HOU9D.HTM
His shooting gave us a couple of games during the season from what I recall. He hit a big slump at the end of the season, unfortunately. It happens. But it's not like Gibson was scoring 30 points per game all season for the Cavs.
If you think personnel decisions have been questionable on this team just for the past 4 years, you're either ignoring the obvious or a new fan of the team. Wake up.
Sorry I meant to type playoff games. A couple of playoff games would've made all the difference against the jazz.
Sure would've. So what? We start players for 2 games now that really didn't do jack for the rest of the season? lol. Then the guy that wanted Steve Novak to get more time above despite the fact he couldn't hit the broadside of a barn and had the defensive tenacity of a fire hydrant was right!
Thats because Gibson plays with Lebron James and the rest of the starters. Novak got garbage time minutes alongside Padgett, Snyder, Lucas, etc... Stats aren't everything. Gibson's performance says more about Gibson than it does Head. Its extremely rare that rookie role players perform with this kind of confidence and impact.
lol I guess all I'm doing is wishing that Luther Head could have hit half the shots that Gibson made.
You're forgetting Gibson was a sure-shot lottery after his freshman season. I was hoping we'd get him.
gibson is a talented player, and it's not just from playing for lebron. gibson is essentially replacing larry hughes, and hughes was horrible during the series. as soon as he began to see more minutes than hughes, the cavaliers offense immediatley looked a hundred times better. seriously, i dont know why larry hughes is even in the nba. he doesn't do anything that well, and shoots a lot of questionable jumpers at a very low percentage. gibson over hughes is huge for the cavs--with the added bonus that eric snow plays less too. snow is even worse than hughes actually. gibson is HUGE for the cavs--the ultimate x factor in this series in fact.
I never said anything about the previous years. But they more sucked than were good. But then we started acquiring battiers and people who would adapt to the jvg system, period. Now I have hope we will acquire some people who know the game called basketball. Novak was complimented on his one on one D by gundy. He just hadn't picked up the team rotating D. And he never played enough in one game consistently enough to get his feet underneath him. We could have picked Gibson. And we shall see next season about some of our bench players. I have high hopes even Luther can return to his Illinois form and dunk more than twice a year.
Well, apparently he's a pretty hardworking guy who impressed Lebron with his work ethick. via ESPN : CLEVELAND -- Daniel Gibson might have arrived on the national stage over the last week, but he won over his Cavaliers teammates about eight months ago. By the end of training camp, not only was the Cavs coaching staff and front office convinced they'd pulled off a steal with the No. 42 pick in last June's draft, but so was LeBron James. By December, Gibson was jamming his foot into the rotation as James gave his full support behind the scenes. By February, he was in the starting lineup as a hybrid guard aimed to make defenses pay for double-teaming James. On Saturday, the 21-year-old Houston native, who tried to steer his way to the Cavs by refusing to work out for any other teams last spring including his hometown Rockets, showed why. "Once I saw his work ethic during practice, after practice, before practice -- I mean, I get to the gym early and he's there before me," James said while basking in the Cavs' Game 6 victory over the Detroit Pistons to clinch a spot in the NBA Finals. "I just knew he was going to be something special." It was indeed a special performance in Game 6 as Gibson made all five of his 3-point attempts, four of them in the fourth quarter, in scoring a career-high 31 points. Which was 10 more than his previous career high, which he set all the way back in Game 4. Combined with his 12-of-15 free-throw shooting performance as the Pistons hacked at him when he attempted to drive, Gibson managed to get his 31 points on a downright stunning nine official shots. Not unlike the way Steve Kerr and John Paxson buried Chicago Bulls opponents who camped down on Michael Jordan, Gibson's efforts on Saturday and in the series busted the Pistons' plans to eliminate the Cavs by swarming James. "LeBron just told me to keep shooting," Gibson said. "He told me from day one he was going to make me special."
Gibson is like many other Cavs...when the 3's are not falling, they put put the ball on the floor and drive. Gibson, Hughes, Pavlovic and even Varejao go to the rim with far more tenacity and skill then Head, Battier, and Alston. The point isn't what Luther Head can learn from Daniel Gibson. It's what Rockets' management can learn from CLE about personnel. Then again....maybe Gibson, Hughes, Pavlovic and Varejao just have higher $Ball numbers than I'm aware of. Witnessing in Austin. GO CAVS!!!
They're two different players. Head is a spot up 3 pt shooter who has saved us many times during the regular season w/ clutch 3's. Gibson has a much more well-rounded game though, including handles and driving. Just like Lebron earned his crown in game 5, Gibson has 'arrived' in game 6. Gibson has progressively played better in 3, 4, and 6. I thought he played great for a rookie in game 3. I never expected him to drive fearlessly into the Pistons and go 12-12 FT's, 21 pts in game 4. And of course last night's performance. I think Gibson could be the Robin to Lebron's Batman for years to come. He compliments him well, being able to knock down open 3's created by Lebron, and taking the initiative and driving himself when there's too much pressure on Lebron or when he's on the bench.
I understand your point, but I don't think the evidence cited bears it out. Gibson and Luther Head took almost the exact same percentage of inside/outside shots this season. (79/21% vs. 80/20%) Hughes also bombed away from outside this year 77% of the time - the exact same % as Rafer Alston (despite Rafer's documented ineptitude on layups) The only one that's much different is Varejao vs. Battier - of course they are different players who play different positions. Varejao spent all of his time at PF and C, and has no range outside 10 feet. Battier is not that kind of player.
DoD, haven't you heard? It was JVG who FAILED to tap into the vast untapped basketball talent sitting at the end of the Rockets' bench. That's why he was fired and why Adelman will make this team a winner because he will liberate the likes of Novack, JL3 & Spanoulis.
I thought this thread was about Luther and Gipson? Anyway, I am happy for Gipson, he seems like he worked his tail off, but it is just one game we are talking about let's see if he can sustain it for a whole season. DD
