Luther doesn't have the off the ball game of those two. Reggie and Rip are so much better at coming off a screen and shooting on the move, while Luther is mostly a spot up shooter. And those two are much taller and longer than Head, so it was easier for them to get off their shot. It doesn't mean that Luther can't improve in those areas. But he's got a long way to go until he can be considered a star caliber player. A couple encouraging things I've seen from him on occasion are the quick pull-up, and the step-back. If he can master those, then he can be an explosive scorer in the mold of a Vinnie Johnson, Ben Gordon, or Gilbert Arenas-lite.
On the note of Luther head's playmaking, which player or retired player do you think can help Head to improve his ball handling and playmaking skills? For the former, I'm thinking of Rafer Alston (ball handling) since as far as I can remember, he hasn't been called for traveling for quite a long time, or any of this ticky-tacky fouls that come from dribbling with the ball. If Alston can teach Head ball handling, then it's the first step for Luther to become our starting PG.
That's a good point, he almost always lands at least a foot inside the arc.. not to mention the weird little body twist in his form. Still, his shot is money and that's what counts I LUV HEAD <3 <3 <3 Don't think he'll be a star though.. Cassell Lite sounds about right
Cassell's shot is so good off the dribble. His shooting form and intelligence lets him get off a shot over guys that are so much more athletic than he is. He can even get off shots on injured legs and feet. A summer of playing one on one would help Head. I don't think I've ever seen him do a crossover dribble.
Luther will probably never get over 15 ppg. But 15 ppg is good for Luther. A solid rotation man for years to come.
Haha. Who said they were shopping him? the BBS was shopping him. I said all summer he would have a breakout year.
I agree, I haven't seen anything from any source that would indicate he was actually being shopped. He's a keeper!
Do anybody know how many games do you have to come off the bench in order to qualify for Sixth Man of the Year award?
It is like you need to play I THINK 70% of the games and more than 1/2 of those have to be off bench.
Only half? Hmmm, Miller came off the bench this game, I'm worried that the new coach will go along with this all season and make Head lose his chance of 'perhaps' getting a Sixth Man of the Year. At least Head can assist and steal unlike one dimensional Gordan.
I must eat crow on this one. I did not believe he would be this good. I wanted that Kansas bigman instead during the draft. I wanted him trade this past off season. Wrong and wrong. He is not almost as valuable as Shane Battier. Once he gets his off the dribble or pick-n-roll medium rage jump shot down, he will be scary.
If Luther, in combination with another player like Bonzi or with the TE, could help us acquire a quality PG or a decent backup PF-C, I'd trade him in a heartbeat. I know this opinion isn't popular but it is realistic. Luther is a three-point threat who can shoot under pressure, but that is the extent of his talent. Too bad we didn't draft David Lee instead of him (well, hindsight is 20-20).
So you'd go with Cat because he's ONE INCH taller than Luther? From NBA.com... Cuttino Mobley Born: Sep 1, 1975 Height: 6-4 / 1,93 Weight: 215 lbs. / 97,5 kg. College : Rhode Island Luther Head Born: Nov 26, 1982 Height: 6-3 / 1,91 Weight: 185 lbs. / 83,9 kg. College : Illinois Unless by "size" you're talking about bulk, in which case I'd prefer Luther's quickness, since neither of them will be called to back-down anyone in the paint. I'd definitely take Luther. Mobley is as good now as he'll ever be. Luther's still got some untapped potential and in only his second year is already nearly as good as Cat.
Luther is pretty much a one dimensional player rightnow: spot-up 3 shooter. other than that he has a long long way to go. if he could drastically improve his p/r and pull-up jumpers, it's possible, he can be an average starter at 2. it would be great if he could better his penertrations, but highly unlikely, as a 6-2 he's somewhat slow. if he could drastically improve his ball handling and passing, he can be an average PG. again, he's neither strong nor fast enough to go by his defender.
Don't undersell Mobley's post-game. That's actually one of his biggest offensive weapons, and is becoming more of a staple for him now in the later stages of his career. But I'd still take Luther over Mobley at this point, too.
Right now he's a glorified Steve Kerr. His handles haven't improved. His post entry passes aren't fantastic, but they work I guess. He still looks a lot better at the 2, where he has no future, than he does at point. If he can become a point, he'll be a starter eventually. My hope is that he will eventually become Mike James without the mental issues. James had to work hard and improve his game. He became more than just a backup SG in a PG's body. Hopefully, Head's career runs parallel in that regard.
I'd say cuttino has at least 2-3 inches on luther actually. he is also significantly bulkier as you stated. I'd give cuttino the edge on defense as well. like I said, if I had to do it RIGHT NOW I'd draft cuttino, off potential...luther. I don't think anyone has been more supportive of his pick than me [though you wouldn't know unless you've met me], I'm just also realistic. luther is my boy.
