There's something at Luby's worth going for?? What exactly is the "fried fish" there? Do they come in squares or sticks? lol.
I had me some takeout Luby's fried fish last night. It is classic comfort food, for those of you who don't get it. I used to go with my grandparents all the time and it reminds me of being 10 years old. The best analogy I can think of is soul food for white people. Or maybe, a 1950's style diner without the self-aware ironic kitschiness. My standard meal is: Fried fish w/tartar sauce mashed potatoes with cream gravy macaroni and cheese 2 pieces jalapeno corn bread chocolate ice box pie Followed by a carbohydrate induced coma for a couple of hours. I used to get green beans instead of either the potatoes or macaroni, but when they stopped over-cooking them 1950's style, and went with a more modern healthy style, I gave up on them. I also really like the cucumber and tomato salad, but haven't gotten it in forever.
I like to call it Fish Rectangles. You're talking about the one on West Gray, right? That's not exactly downtown. I ran into some Rockets employees there. I saw the head Red Rowdy handler, so I texted the_yoyo and asked if I should go ahead and punch him in the face. Cool story bro. I haven't been there in a while. Lubys holds a special place for me too.
That's because it's a Luby's, Etc. They don't have the variety of food a regular Luby's has and typically serves 3 different entrees everyday of the week. They do make it up with a sandwich station, pasta/asian/mexican station, and a grill. I go to the Law School across the street and eat there once or twice a week. BTW, they do serve fried fish at least once a week there. Not sure which day but I believe they have a calendar that shows what they're serving.
The Luby's on 290 near Tidwell was a buffet on weekends...I dont know if they're still doing it but I used to down the fried fish 3-4 pieces at a time. Thats the only thing I ever get.
not to bump this silly thread but I had to respond to the comfort food post Sunday night I was talking with someone about Joel Osteen's father starting the ministry. their church was on the side of town i grew up in. we used to go to Luby's on Sunday and get off on the exit close to the church when returning home. there would be a huge line of cars leaving the church almost everytime we ate at that luby's on sunday. that memory is stuck in my head.
