I think Morey and Les will try their best to keep them within reason. The biggest knock against them is Scola's age and Lowry's outside shot. I think Lowry could demand more if he was a dependable shooter but he's not. What we know is Morey is looking to make a move at PF/C position. I think we'll know more what the Rockets plans are come draft day. I still think Al Jefferson is the person they'll target come draft day. Rockets have the right pieces to make a nice offer to Minny.
Hmmmm, yes I could see that. I just think they may be doing exactly that, in case they have to move on from Yao. DD
This is not the 1st time I've heard someone mention Carl Landry's knee issue. What were the details of the situation? From what I understand, the Bobcats were going to sign him to a offer sheet, but Morey somehow scared them off by telling them that Landry's knees were not healthy enough and he was injured, but in reality, he was fine all along. After the Bobcats got scared and backed off, Morey matched their offer sheet. Am I right, or Am I missing something? Didn't it leave a bad taste in Landry's mouth? Scola and Lowry both are going to be here next season, but between them, I can see a team like the Knicks overpaying for a guy like Lowry.
The 'new' NBA GM-speak is to 'scare-off' potential bidders by avowing 'we'll match'. If a GM says, 'I'll call your bluff' they might just get matched AND lose a week AND posture with other prospective signees (and their fanbase). So, GMs now believe they can bluff other GMs into (significant) savings on RFAs. All but Kings and Wolves IMHO are play-off possibles going into next season (and we haven't even gotten close to the Lotto drawing let alone LBJ's decision, FAs etc etc et al) so yes, I agree, next year for Rox is uncertain regardless of Yao's level of comeback. I do have faith that the '10-'11 incarnation will be a superior one to the '09-'10 version. Will that be enough?
This is the bottomline. Fortunately, K-Low and Luis are championship caliber role players and should stay at that level for a few more years. Go buy your Lowry and Scola jerseys.. They're gonna be Rockets for a while.
Thats what I said, Morey did match their offer sheet. Anyways, thats why I asked. I didn't know the details but thanks for telling me.
No, you didn't. Look again at what you said. Nobody scared the Bobcats off whatsoever. Both Carl Landry and the Charlotte Bobcats counter-signed an offer sheet. Within a few days, the Rockets MATCHED that offer sheet. The reference to Landry's knee was about how, early on in free agency, Morey "let slip" the team's concerns about Landry's knee and its ability to hold up long term. Landry's agent accused Morey of chilling the bidding on his client due to this tactic. THAT is what DD was alluding to earlier.
Nah, man. Didn't mean to pick on you. It's just that I (and many others here) have little tolerance for speaking out of both sides of your mouth. You know, like some people . . . cough! . . . the OP of this thread . . . cough! . . . I don't even think you meant to do it. Just got tripped up on the technicalities of the situation. And . . . CONFLICT AVOIDED!!!
Cool Anyways, thanks for the details. I didn't understand his situation and wanted to know that if we were going to face a similar situation with Lowry and Scola.
How much caproom are the Rockets expected to have in 2011 if Scola & Lowry sign for say $10 mil/year combined? Bima?
I just believe most areas are shades of gray, and when situations change, so should approaches. I guess, I am not as black and white as you Bima.... Sue me ! DD
3 years/39 million (24 for Scola and 15 for Lowry). Anything more and we'll likely let them walk. I could see Scola taking as low as 6 per, but only because he is a gamer and a team player. Lowry probably won't take less than 4 (unless no one makes an offer) and could possibly go as high as 5.5.
I expect Scola and Lowry will get "lowballed", but that is what happens to rFA. Sometimes, they are offered huge contracts to keep the other team from matching, but I think NBA GMs have for the most part learned that this is not a smart practice. I just don't see either not getting a contract offer better than a one year tender. Lowry may sign a one year tender if he decides he wants to leave.
That may be overpaying Lowry a little... i think the max we should go is 3 yrs/12 million... especially if we are going to be over the cap with the new CBA...
What does Yao's status have to do with Scola and Lowry? Wouldn't we need those guys even more if Yao doesn't come back?
Luis will get a 4-yr deal starting @7.5 and Lowry a 4 or 5 yr deal starting @$4. So I believe. That's neither lowballing nor cap busting IMHO.
