http://cdn16.castfire.com/audio/303...tp://grantland.com/podcasts/grantland-sports/ I think just about every one of these is a must listen, but this one especially was interesting. Lowe asked what his relationship with analytics is and how he uses the information and Vogels response was he looks at offensive an defensive efficiency rating and tries to scheme in ways that make those numbers better. He also said they stress corner 3s and limiting bad mid range jumpers. Saying you can't completely ignore the midrange shot but they have to be really quality looks. Just thought it was interesting to hear how a certain coach views and uses analytics and that it's not just crazy Morey ideas and that actual quality coaches believe in gearing towards the high efficiency shots that are stressed here.
Analytics discovers what good coaches like Pops do in order to replicate it. It's not the other way around.
Well, yes and no. Of course, analytics can only analyze what's already happened. But that doesn't mean what has happened was intentional. You don't need a good coach for some of your players to shoot the corner 3. Now analytics just tell coaches to intentionally focus on that shot because that is statistically more efficient shot. And I believe that people like Morey needs coaches who are willing to experiment on things that are statistically sound but no coaches have done before.
It'll be interesting to see how the Lakers and Byron Scott do this season with their plan to take fewer 3P shots. They want scoring at the basket, but don't really want to push the pace like the Showtime Lakers and don't really have a good low post center. Although Ed Davis looked good in their first preseason game. I'm not sure how they'll get the floor spacing needed to make it easier to get to the basket. So far it looks like they're going to rely on tough fade away jumpers from Kobe and long 2P jumpers from the other players. Magic Johnson and his hate for 3P shooting and analytics probably have too much influence on Scott and the Lakers.
The Nuggets did very well with this model 2-3 years ago (except they like to run) until completely losing their mojo in the playoffs against the Warriors. To this day I still can't understand what happened in that series. The Nuggets were the exact style of team that should have shredded the Warriors. But they were lethargic, unmotivated and lost their chemistry against an inferior team.
