Maybe Aldine was more progressive (lol), but I was in public school in the 80s and we didn't have any Scripture in school. We did recite the pledge of allegiance.

Cool. I'm sure the teacher of that class you saw that had the ten commandments posted up did it out of their own desire rather than having it state mandated it.

So this seems like a place where I can test your ideological consistency or whether you just are a fascist as in "rules to enforce my culture over you and rules to enforce not allowing other cultures to impose their culture onto me" aka "rules for thee not for me".

Do you believe a US State should be constitutionally allowed to force their state public education system to post surah fatiha in every classroom under their domain?

The Supreme Court ruled on the issue of displaying the 10 Commandments in public school classrooms in the 1980 case Stone v. Graham. Originating from Kentucky, where a state law mandated the posting of the 10 Commandments in all public school classrooms, the Court delivered its decision on November 17, 1980, declaring the law unconstitutional under the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution. The Court found that the law served a primarily religious purpose and thus violated the principle of government neutrality toward religion.

Prior to this mandate, the 10 Commandments were displayed in some public school classrooms without legal challenge. Since the Court's ruling, displaying the 10 Commandments in public school classrooms would be deemed unconstitutional. Millennials were born after this ruling, meaning their classrooms were in violation of the Constitution if they displayed it.

Louisiana has recently passed a law requiring the posting of the 10 Commandments in all public school classrooms once again. I suspect this Supreme Court may uphold it. If the Supreme Court were to disregard the Establishment Clause, overturn precedent, and permit such displays, would you support mandating that all classrooms also display the Five Pillars of Islam, the Five Precepts of Buddhism, the Three Pillars of Sikhism, and other religious teachings? Personally, I would find it acceptable. Teaching about all faiths to every student is not harmful in my view, but singling out one religion would be discriminatory.

If SCOTUS accepted Louisiana's argument, it would be finding that the 10 commandments were acceptable but all those other pillars and precepts were not acceptable. Because LA's argument is that the 10 commandments are historical and the basis for US law. The same could not be said of those other things. They would essentially be establishing religion but pretending they aren't.

I can attest that teaching "Bible" in schools will not prevent kids with a tendency to be scumbags from doing scumbag things

kids, by their nature, want to rebel against something. if you teach them bible verses, that's what they will rebel against.

I can see the historical basis, but for US law—that one is going to need some creative manuring (pun intended).

Most kids won't even notice the 10 commandment posters are there let alone contemplate them or give them any meaningful consideration.

The vast majority of kids matriculating through Catholic private school education K-12 are coming out the other side people not engaged in the Catholic faith in any meaningful way. They might get married in the church and attend at Christmas and Easter to make their parents/grandparents happy [but many won't even do that] but the reality is most of these kids end up not practicing Christianity in any diligent way.

And that's with required retreats, required theology classes, Christian iconography everywhere, required attendance at Mass etc etc.

    Putting up a poster? Please.

It's all just culture war bs.

New Testament game shows should also be prohibited in the public schools
