one last thing about the finale, no crazy theories or anything like that. I just really liked the way they used the revelation flashback moments not only for the story, but for us viewers as well. it was better than any old "clip show" and it wrapped up each character's story nicely.
That's the part I'm having a hard time wrapping my mind around. Did they all really move on together (to heaven or wherever) or does each person (Jack in this case) have their own personal pre-Heaven life with each person in there with them just being a bit of a "prop" as you said. So while Jack is having his pre-heaven experience with Kate and crew Kate could be having one with some of the same people but also different people from her life? I know Christian said the time Jack spent on the island was the most important part of his life so is part of this pre-Heaven thing reserved just for people who were together on the island? Basically, that group formed a bond that they couldn't have with anyone that wasn't part of the island experience and does that mean the rest of us (who never went to the island) don't get the pre-Heaven reward? Was Christian just a sort of guide (shepherd) and not joining them since he never really experienced the island with them?
I hit up one of my forums for atheists/agnostic types and many of them just crushed this ending. They hated it and hated even more that despite the token attempts by the Lost writers to make it not a Christian ending it was very strongly Christian in that it ended in a church (stained glass window with other religious symbols...big whoop) and Jack's dad's name was Christian freaking Shephard. I'm as non-religious as they come (just ask anyone in D&D) and it didn't bother me a bit. Just like it didn't bother me when a cloud of smoke whipped people's asses even though I don't believe in ass-kicking smoke. Just like it didn't bother me when all the other insane things happened that are completely impossible. That's why I watched...to suspend my disbelief.
But then why was Penny there? She never set foot on the island as far as I can recall, nor was she close to anyone on the island but Desmond. If I were her I would be wondering what the hell I am doing here. And even if it was only Jack's purgatory...why would Penny be in it? Does she really have that much importance in his life? Or Libby for that matter.
That's kind of how I saw it. All the Losties were sitting in the church and Christian was the one who opened the door to let the enveloping light in. He wasn't really part of the island experience.
Good point. Maybe Desmond ask if he could get an extra ticket for Penny and Hurley got one for Libby.
Penny was never on the island, but she was crucial to getting Desmond on that island in the first place, then the whole Not Penny's boat thing, and she wound up rescuing the Oceanic 6 in the end. That and then the fact that she is the daughter of Charles Widmore, I think the island did have a purpose for her, and she was probably the biggest non-island character on the show.
it could have been all business, based on the availability of the guest actors who were working on other projects. If the woman who played Penny was guaranteed a guest spot in the Finale when they worked her contract at the beginning of the year, then they had to throw her in that final scene. throw her in the church with Desmond. same thing with Juliet. they already had her in Hawaii. notice Boone was single- where was his true love moment? didn't matter- Ian Somerhalder had the Finale shoot dates on hold for the entire season. this is thinking from the business side of things.
I choose to go with my own interpretation here rather than try and cypher what the producers intended. I prefer the idea that 99% of the time, each person has their own unique pre-purgatory world that includes their people. I think this would be a unique exception to this case, where the Island-bonding put together the S1 characters. The non-fits like Libby and Penny are there as bonus "props" for Hugo, Desmond, etc. since they were critical to them. You could probably argue that baby Charlie Hume should be annoyed that Dad didn't include him I think Penny, Libby, etc had their own "real" purgatory that didn't include the 815 crew. I say all this with the Purgatory pre-heaven bit not squaring up with any afterlife thoughts of my own. I also don't know how Christian-specific that scenario was, anyway. Struck me as more in line with Bhuddism, personally (enlightenment leading to attainment of Nirvana). The Tibetan Bhuddists talk about an "intermediate" stage of death that leads either to reincarnation (to try again) or "finding the bright light...that ends the cycle of reincarnation" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Afterlife#Buddhism
Anyone almost j*zz themselves when Kate was in that black dress at the concert? OMG, she was so jacked. I want!
Everything went up a notch for the finale, and Kate in the black dress was absolutely one of the highlights.
Not just cleaning up. Any time she was on the screen, I noticed. That's a good looking woman. As for the end, I think it was the consciousness for all of them. Christian said they were real and just needed each other. As for not having certain people, I'm ok with that. Otherwise, the room would have been full. I know the writers wanted to have the Season 1 characters there, but Boone seemed irrelevant to me. Walt would have been more fitting, but we know why he wasn't there. Also would have liked to see Sayid with Nadia. As a non-religious person, I thought this end was perfect. It left enough open to interpretation. In the end, it was never going to make everyone happy.
If the candidates could not be killed by the mib/smoke monster due to Jacobs touch. Then why didn't sayid and hurley die much sooner? Jacob touched them after they left the island..
Just watched the finale. I thought it was complete BS. What a boring waste of time. Had such high hopes too. Oh well.
Pretty sad indeed. Watching that summary episode before the finale with the "final transmissions" was really depressing too.
