I thought the footage of the debris during the credits was meant to insinuate (but not confirm) that they died in the original Oceanic 815 crash and that everything after that was purgatory/dream/whatever they needed to go through in order to let go/move on. And that the the stories of the island, etc. were populated with the passengers of that flight because those had been the last ones they'd seen/"known" alive. But that wouldn't explain what Ben or Juliet were doing there at the end. As for Ben not being ready to move on, I figured it was because he felt he still had some more atoning/coming to peace to do.
The ending was specifically ambiguous as to any of that. Jack was in the exact same spot where he was thrown from the plane. It's perfectly plausible that he died from the crash along with all the rest.
I loved all the Island stuff. I'm a little "meh" on the sideways, but I'm OK with it. I understand them wanting to have a reunion moment at the end and do think that this was a good way to do that. I think it'll grow on me. Overall, I think this might be the best episode of LOST ever which is a hell of a way to go out.
I think they all dead along the original story and the side ways flashes were purgatory. I think the point is not the island but the people and the love they have for each other.
Kimmel is going to be awesome tonight. The jokes have been great.. "So all dogs don't go to heaven."
Kind of disappointing in my opinion. Don't understand the whole point of island or the alternate time line thing. So was it just a a process for everyone to move onto life after death?
That wouldn't make sense. I think Jack's dad tells him something like his time on the Island was the most significant part of his life, and that's why the people he knew from the Island are all moving on together.
They pretty much tried to blunt us over the head that what happened on the island was reality, and that the flashes in season 6 are purgatory. If they all died at the beginning in the crash, Jack's dad wouldn't have said that "some died before you, some died after you".
And when Jack tells Desmond that what they do on the Island matters, that should have made it clear that the Island isn't some dream world. Its real.
how does the entire sideways plotline make any sense? terrible ending to show that kept me entertained enough to watch for 6 seasons, but in hindsight, was awful. sappy, melodramatic, and didn't really make much sense.
Well at the end, Christian told Jack, "Some came before, some came much later." What I got out of it is that the alternate timeline wasn't Heaven or even Purgatory, but kind of a waiting area where everyone would wait until their friends joined them. However since the alternate timeline didn't really have a "now" (also from Christian) it would depend more on a person's realizing that they are gone and accepting it and being ready to move on. Hence Ben's refusal to go in to the church. He wanted to spend more time with Alex and Rousseau, neither of whom were "enlightened" and ready to move on. As for Michael and Walt and others not appearing? Well, budget restraints and conflicts are a pain. Just a thought.
