They explained the flash sideways reality, but yes explaining the island, Jacob, and the MIB could have been a little better. But the ending was great on an emotional level. Having everyone who died back together again was amazing.
Christian said time did not matter there. I guess whenever or wherever they died, they somehow met at the same place and time. Don't try to make any sense of the show, because it does not make sense.
now that i've calm down from the emotional high, i gotta echo this sentiment. it still feels like a cop out. what the hell happened to David, did he cease to exist ala back to the future? Smokey died from a shotgun wound? really?
I only watched a bit of the 1st season so sorry if this is a dumb question....... so did that finale just confirmed that they are all dead? Ironically, I found a random article theorizing this from 2005...... http://www.daytondailynews.com/blogs/content/shared-gen/blogs/dayton/rollins/entries/2005/10/02/the_lost_soluti.html Funny to read the skeptical comments at the bottom lol!
It really was great on an emotional level, but not because "having everyone who died back together." Because everyone dies. Hugo was there. Ben was there. Who knows, maybe Hurley lived 2,000 years on the island protecting it until he died? But the final scene with Jack lying in the same spot where he began his incredible journey, only this time with the immense joy of witnessing the people that he loves take off on a plane soaring above him, was incredibly powerful.
So why did Ben continue to wait outside? I thought it was initially because he hasn't died yet, but neither has Hurley.
I thought that was fairly well explained... when the gold pool that made him Smokey went away, Smokey lost his immortality - i.e. the blood shown after Jack was hitting him.
My theory (yes, even after the show has ended I have theories) is that since "there is no now" in this temporary afterlife, whenever one of the Losties died, their afterlife began with them on the plane, completely unaware of the crash, their time on the island, and their eventual death whether it be on the island or off. They couldn't move on from this temporary afterlife until they're memories of their earthly life had been triggered and they were ready to "let go". Jack just happened to be the last one to "let go". Something I thought was interesting was that even though Ben had his memories, he wasn't ready to move on, presumably because he wanted to build a life with Rousseau and Alex and like Ana Lucia, they "weren't ready yet".
On another note, a surfer looking video game tester is destroying a couple of old farts on Jeopardy right now. 22600 to 200 to 200
They're both dead. They acknowledged their time on the island as the new Jacob/Richard by saying "You were a good #2" / "you were a great #1". Ben just wasn't ready to move on, or wasn't ready to face the ones he caused so much grief.
He continues to wait outside because he's not ready to move on. He probably wants to spend more time with his "daughter" or something.
And just to reiterate, no one can go around saying, "I KNEW IT, THEY WERE ALL DEAD AND THE ISLAND WAS LIMBO." They were not, in fact, dead on the island. People died on the island. The Limbo or transitional phase was the alternate reality in season six, and season six only. Jack didn't die in the initial plan crash. Kate didn't die in the initial plan crash. Sawyer didn't die in the initial plan crash. Hugo didn't die in the initial plan crash.
