Remember that book supposedly written by someone on Oceanic 815 called "Bad Twin"? The writers of LOST have definitely written the show long time in advance, contrary to what some people have been saying!
Pretty ballsy for a show to have one of it's last episodes barely contain any main characters that we've been watching for the past 6 seasons. It was ok as a story that stood on it's own. It didn't feel like it moved the overall story much. I figure when we see the last episode, we'll realize why they made this episode. It might tie into the big 'reveal' at the end. Either that or this was just underwhelming overall.
It could also be that the smoke monster was what was inside the cave. The light source was a bad thing and "mother" was protecting it from getting out. She knew that if someone reaches into the source, it would unleash evil. Jacob not knowing the worst of it, threw his brother in the cave which casued the evil to kill MIB and then got unleashed on the island. MIB was found dead far away from the cave, something the smoke monster has shown to do to its prey (literally, throw them). I am thinking the smoke monster later took MIB's form on the island. So the scene shown end of season 5 between MIB and Jacob where MIB was talking about how badly he wanted to kill Jacob, that really is not Jacob's brother or his brother's soul. It is actually the evil entity that took over his brother's dead body. And that is why we don't see remorse/sympathy from Jacob is any of those latter scenes towards MIB. Aside from that, the donkey wheel initiating time travel, Dharma initiative, sonic fence that keeps the monster out, etc. are still unanswered.
Still dont know why, when, and how the statue and the temple got built. A lot of unanswered questions I think will never be answered
So, is this what I understood from last night? This cavern of light was really a barrier (cork) keeping the "evil" being locked away. The "mother" told them to NEVER go in the cavern because it would let this entity out, using that person's body as a means to escape. Jacob drinks the special sauce, locking him in as the protector of said cavern and making him "invincible" to anything that came out of it, as well as the one who creates the "rules" the island is run by. Am I formulating this right?
Yea I think it's pretty safe to assume that she was in fact a smoke monster herself. She knew exactly what would happen if anyone went down into the light, suggesting she had gone down there herself. And also, like you said, would explain how she wiped out that whole village and sealed up the dig site by herself
And MIB killed her with the same knife he later gave to Richard to kill Jacob with. The same knife Dogan gave Sayid to kill Locke with. Maybe they believed that it had killed the smoke once before (mother) and that it could again.
I think last night could have explained some other things we haven't thought of yet. If Jacob has the power to bring people to the island, it's likely his mother did too. She's probably the reason that boat wrecked, bringing those people, including Jacob and Esau's birth mother, to the island. She had already pegged the two babies as candidates. She needed at least one of them to take her place as protector. She killed their birth mother so that they would believe there was nothing "across the sea" and they wouldn't have a reason to leave. This leads me to believe why the others, under orders from Jacob (via Richard), kidnapped the children. Jacob was looking for candidates. The children were not yet corrupted by life and were young enough to be brainwashed into not wanting to leave. It would explain the fascination with Claire and Aaron. Aaron was probably the first child born on the island since Alex. And like Jacob and Esau, he was conceived off the island and his pregnant mother was shipwrecked shortly before his birth (same with Alex, too). Also, in the Bible, Aaron is the great great grandson of Jacob. I think the other took a special interest in Walt because he, like MIB, was "special". Overall, I can't be too upset with the Walt storyline. The producers/writers messed up and realized that the actor playing was going to grow too much in relation to how fast time was actually passing and that they had to write him off the show. In a perfect world, Walt would have stayed the same age and they'd have continued to develop his story. But, in my personal organization of LOST, I'll chalk up the others letting Walt leave to Jacob recognizing that Walt being "special" was a "bad special" and was too similar to MIB/Smokey and that Jacob didn't want someone like that being a candidate.
The light in the cave is knowledge, which is neither good nor evil. People are drawn to the island because they are drawn to the light like moths. The island is Eden. If you partake of the light, you fall from grace, which is what happened to Smokey. You can't let the light out into the world or else mankind will be corrupted by it, not because the light is evil, but because man is weak and can't properly handle knowledge. It's better to have faith than knowledge, a la Locke (and now Jack). We all have a little of the light (knowledge) inside of us, but apparently you can have too much of a good thing if you're not careful.
@trustme - fantastic call a Momma Smokey. I think that's dead on. She was both roles in one. I wonder if they got C4 (flame station had been loaded with it before destroyed, so others had it around) and were the ones that rigged the plane. Richard and Widmore knew each other and could have come to an agreement. The more I think about it, the more I like the idea that MIB is nameless, and probably Mother as well. Every thing Mother did was geared towards setting up her replacement. She needed a blank slate to work with, no one that had something to return to off the island, so preggers Claudia was the perfect set up (that she brought about?). Jacob was named, and that's probably why he wasn't her favorite. It's a little thing, but her whole plan centered around robbing the kids of identity, choice, and any thoughts of leaving her solitary. Just a name represents a piece of individuality and free will.
Awesome episode. Great acting by young Jacob and MIB. Does anybody know what episode they referenced near the end where Locke says "our own Adam and Eve"?
The Smoke Monster IMO definately PreDates MIB Something or someone had to kill the village and I don't think Crazy Step Mom was shooting power like that unless it was as smokie. NOW Interesting things. People who can see/speak to the Dead: Hurly, Miles, MIB, [walt?] When the baby was born I wondered if AARON was suppose to be the new Jacob. I am glad to understand the MIB now. Jacob beat up the MIB - it means they can HURT each other but not kill each other. Rocket River
Jacob has left the island multiple times. Can't the MiB do so just once! [I guess mother should have told MiB that if he was the candidate he could leave the island from time to time] Rocket River
I always read Vozzek's LOST recaps... He does a superb job Here's the recap/thoughts for last nights episode: http://darkufo.blogspot.com/2010/05/things-i-noticed-across-sea-by-vozzek69.html
