OUUUUUUUU, what about the comment that Jacob's brother told him someday "he'll be able to make the rules of the game." Intriguing.

I enjoyed it very much. The quote at the very beginning of the episode was directed at fans like you. "Every question I answer will only lead to another question." If they discuss what the light really is then people are just going to ask about the origins of the light and the questions just keep going back and back. It's like the child who continually asks "why?" no matter what answer is given. At some point, you're just going to have to live with the answer "just because". I think this video sums up my point.

    NSFW - language

I never really expected them to be able to answer EVERYTHING to the point where I wouldn't have any more question for the the simple fact that in a mythical/sci-fi show such as this, almost every answer inevitably brings up more questions.

That woman was simply the protector of the Island before Jacob was the protector. And it's likely that there was a protector before her.

I didn't take away from it that Smokey took the form of Jacob's brother. I took it as the light turned the man in black into Smokey.

You may not have cared much about who Adam and Eve were, but that was one of the major unanswered questions from Season 1. If they had left it unanswered, a lot of people would have been upset.

Don't know if anybody is watching Supernatural on the CW, but I'm starting to get very similar vibes.

Right now am wondering if the light was literally Lucifer and that giving him a body released him. To go a step further, perhaps killing the "protector" and the remaining candidates is the breaking of the wine bottle... or the seventh seal of the apocalypse.

Would be interesting to try to explain the rest of the seals within the context of the series.

I love scifi so I understand that everything will not be explained (BSG) but the big things that were explained: Who are Jacob, MIB, Adam and Eve, How MIB got turned into a monster, Why MIB wanted to leave so badly, How Jacob become so powerful was pretty tired. Writers basically said that everything is essentially all coincidence and what is happening to everyone now is a big game perpetrated by 2 children.

Now with this "uber-fantastic" light fiasco everything that the writers cant explain is now so easily explained away. Watch.

Hey how did they go back in time? Light did it

Hey why is Walt so damn big? You didn't hear the Light did it

Why does Widmore want the island so bad? obviously wants the light because it can do pretty much anything

MIB got turned into a monster how? LIGHT!

How is Jacob.. Jacob? Juice, probably infused with Light energy.

What is this "Light" bro? stop asking questions.. It is what it is.

    That is a cop out!!

Now it seems "True" LOST fans are gleefully reveling in how confusing the plot it is now because writers just told us with this episode we don't care to give you real answers..

I'm feeling this right now too. A few garden of eden references (cave of light=tree of knowledge, wine=apple, woman feeding man, adam&eve, corruption of man) and MIB is made to look like an innocent guy who wanted answers. I guess we can't be afforded the luxury of absolute good v. evil in this show even in the grand scheme of it.

And did Jacob create the smoke monster, or maybe it (the cave) manifested what was inside Jacob's brother?

When Smokey came out of the light cave, the light was seemingly gone. Two interesting things about this:

    1. Jacob lasted all of 1 day as a protector of the light before he screwed that up.

    2. If the point of protecting the island was to protect the cave of light, and the cave no longer had light, then what's the point?

I understand that they can't answer everything. So why create an episode so late in the game that does not answer anything and does not advance the plot.

The back stories are cool when they are well done, like the Richard Alpert one. I just felt like this one was poorly done. There are already energy pockets, why does there need to be a cave of light. There is already an unexplainable MiB and Jacob. Now we have an unexplainable step mom of MiB and Jacob.

So Jacob and MiB just washed up onto shore. Crazy step mom somehow made it to where they can't kill each other. Jacob somehow got powers by drinking wine. MiB somehow got powers by falling into the cave of light. MiB hints at creating the donkey wheel. Step mom asks "How do you know it will work". "Because I'm special". And then there's the "there is a little bit of the light in all of us". Why try to explain that? Plus its sappy. I love lost, but I don't drink the kool-aide. This show was just plain weak.

They could have made the back story a lot cooler without explaining anything and I would have been satisfied. You have ancient temples and statues on the island. The could have done something with an Egyptian ritual, but instead we got this dreck.

i thought it was a good episode but felt that it was a bit of a let down considering the build up to it and how few episodes were left. I know the writers cant please everyone all the time but this episode probably would have been more impactful earlier in the season.

hopefully the last 3 or 4 hours of the show give validation to this episode. There were some things that were answered but other things that were not.

I think its inevitable that this show will end disappointingly, because there's just too much left to cover in too few hours.

So what exactly do you want to know? What the light is? What the island is? You're not going to be satisfied with any answer so why bother?

It's not like it's the first time we've seen it. We saw it when Desmond blew up the hatch. We saw it when both Ben and Locke turned the Frozen Donkey Wheel (which we saw tonight too). We saw it when Juliet detonated the nuke at the Swan site.

We knew that there were pockets of energy all around the Island and if we'd put two and two together, we'd have realized that there seems to be sources of light at those pockets as well. That this light seems to be the source of the electromagnetic energy.

All they really did was tie this thing we already knew existed to the essence of what the Island is.

Are you really upset that they didn't explain it enough? If anything, they might have explained too much. But since the light was an already existing element, I don't think that's the case.

I don't know if people were begging to know what the "force" was when the original Start Wars trilogy came out, but the fact is that we didn't know and just had to accept it was some magical power. When Lucas made the prequels, he attempted to explain what it was and people hated it and wished he had just left it a mystery.

The Island is the same thing. Try to explain it too much and it loses all of what makes the island "The Island". The fact is that if they hadn't shown the "cave o' light", then any potential answer that could be attributed to it would have been attributed generically to the island as a whole instead. And in all likelihood, you wouldn't have been satisfied with that either.

Well now that we know where Jacob & MIB came from, where did real mom & step mom come from. This is the same issue that science & religion fight over. Where's the beginning of time. Or is it that time has no beginning. Going to be interesting to see if the writers deal with that subject. Over all, I enjoyed this segment.

The writers are paying tribute to themselves and their ability/insistence to draw out simple explanations and story-telling into season long events. I mean, they've been doing it for the first 5+ seasons now...why should they quit now haha?

I very much feel your pain, and its frustrating that the end is so close and they are still doing this to us! The premise of this episode had so much potential and instead of shutting a few doors they just opened up some more. Here's the most polarizing thing that now stands out in my mind after tonights episode....

So apparently the male and female set of bones found by Jack and them in which they referred to as Adam and Eve are actually MIB (hilarious that they went beyond the normalness of reality by not saying his name once) and their mother, how is it that his body decomposed into bones, and yet in the previous episode he was walking around the Island his normal self? The scene where MIB and Jacob are sitting on the beach watching the ship come in and MIB says to Jacob "I'm going to kill you you know", comes AFTER tonight's episode because he is able to take the form of smokey but also changes back to human form? So I guess he cloned himself and let the original body decompose? I wonder how they are going to explain this one but, if you use LOST's mathematical equations on their function of time relative to explaining an event, we wouldn't know the answer to this until season 11...A season that won't even exist!

Thought the episode was nowhere near as good as the previous episodes. One of the worst of the season imo. I understand the need to explain the origins of jacob/smokey but it just wasn't that entertaining.

We've known Smokey to take physical forms of dead people before, notably Christian. Hell, he's using the appearance of Locke right now while Locke's actual corpse is buried in the survivor's graveyard. Is it such a shocker that he would take the form of his old physical self? In "Ab Aeterno" he even told Richard, while in the form of his old body, that "the devil" (Jacob) stole his body.

Going back to my comment 2 posts back about MIB and his body decomposing, yea I understand he can take the shape of people that have died, which I guess includes himself, but what about Illiana's statement about how once he took the form of Locke he is stuck that way? The time period between him taking the shape of his dead self and that of John Locke, he has taken the forms of others (Christian Sheperd), how was it that he was not stuck as them?

The inference was that it was because Jacob was dead. That he was only able to freely change forms while Jacob was alive.

i guess to me the big question is

how did MiB's mother talk to him and lead him to the village?

if that wasnt smokey was it like the same thing with michael and hurley earlier?

why couldn't jacob see his biological mother?

question raises is now will Hurley become the new MiB because he can talk with dead people?

Mother said MIB was "special". Everyone kept calling Walt was "special" too. Both have paranormal abilities, MIB's ability to see dead people and Walt's ability to be a key focal point of the show for 2 seasons only to be practically never heard from/referenced to again as if he never existed despite living amongst these people for a significant period of time

It bothers me very much that they are going to end the show SOOO open ended. I mean, they don't have to tie up every small detail. BUT, a simple 5 minute monologue from Jacob explaining "What is the Island" would be very nice. It could almost be like this:

Hurley: "So, What is the Island?"

    Jacob: "Okay, it is this..."

    Simple.

Come on, don't tell me they can't squeeze in a 5 minute Jacob monologue somewhere in the coming episodes.. the writers are just cruel.
