Dude you really have no idea what's going on. They were together for almost every episode in season 5. We first see them as cops in season 6 but that is in the sideways reality where the island is underwater and sawyer never crashes on the island.
tonight's episode preview: Spoiler Tonight at 9|8c on ABC, we air "Across The Sea" which delves deeper into the story of Jacob and the Man in Black. epic!

Lucky dog, the journey's just starting for you, and you don't have wait 3 months for a midseason intermission. It'll be just 30-40 straight hours of twists, turns, and an ever shrinking tshirt on Kate Austen.
I missed Season 4-5 and watched the 45 minute 5-season recap to catch up. I thought in the alternate dimension, the lives of the Oceanic flight would still resemble their original lives when the plane crashed. Thus, Miles and Sawyer should have known each other before the Oceanic flight in some form or another, regardless if the plane crashed or not.
Obviously that's not the case if you've been following this season. If the alternate timeline represents what would have happened if the Island blew up back in the 70s, then (for whatever reason) it had a dramatic change on future events.
I was just thinking back to Ab Aeterno. Jacob uses the metaphor of the cork in the wine bottle to describe what the island is to Richard. The Island is a cork that prevent the wine/evil from escaping. But at the end of the episode, Jacob gives the bottle to the man in black who smashes the bottle, spilling the wine anyway, even thought the cork was never removed. I think that this is symbolic of Flocke's plan. If Smokey can't leave because the bottle is corked, he'll just have to break the whole damned bottle. The question is, what does the bottle itself represent? Jacob and the candidates? Anyway, here's what I'm thinking. What if Jacob's metaphor isn't exactly what he says it is. What if the Island is really the bottle and the cork is Jacob/candidates? There may be two ways for Smokey to escape. 1) Remove the cork, meaning kill Jacob and all the candidates. 2) Break the bottle, meaning destroy the island. A lot of people have speculated that the Losties will destroy Smokey by sinking the Island. This is because Flocke mentioned an issue with water (why he couldn't fly as the smoke monster over to Hyrda island). But being knocked into the water by Jack in the last episode didn't seem to phase him too much. Maybe Flocke's comment was just part of his con. Just like how he can't kill Jacob/candidates directly, maybe he can't destroy the Island directly either. Maybe he's going to con the Losties into destroying the Island, which will also set him free. Just a thought.
your whole question assumes that Miles and Sawyer don't know or recognize each other on the current Island timeline. they do know and recognize each other, as they spent 3 years together working for Dharma Security as well as multiple timeshifts. the parallel universe shows Miles and Sawyer working together in Law Enforcement. so yes, both universes have the two working together as colleagues. But Miles wasn't on Flight 815 in either of the Universes.
I think your on to something. The wine bottle clearly represents the Island. That's why Jacob drank from it when he was given the responsibility of protecting the Island. And notice that preview. I think its Flocke's plan to sink the Island and I'm even more convinced Jack is "the candidate," since he's the only one who wants to stay on the Island, like Jacob.
This episode was weak! 45 minutes of "I want to leave! why wont you let me leave?" Jacob and MIB, who they were was a huge let down looks like we aren't going to find out what the island really is looks like the writers don't know how to explain anything so they make up this bunch "all encompassing" light malarkey was anyone truly fascinated by this epi? because I'm not cool with the explanation of everything in this show being "Just Because"
A couple of things I noticed. In "Ab Aeterno", the man in black told Richard that "the devil" stole his body and his humanity. Tonight, we saw exactly what he was referring to. Also, back in Season 1 it was Smokey, masquerading as Christian, who led Jack to the caves. Flocke confirmed this a few episodes ago. Now that we know that the man in black is "Adam", it's kind of like Smokey was leading Jack to where his old physical body was laid to rest.
I didn't really like this episode. So we know who Adam and Eve are. Its not like I really even remembered the Adam and Eve scene. And we know that smokey has taken the shape of Jacobs dead brother. But now we have two more questions. Who the hell was that lady. What the hell is the cave of light. I think its too late in the game to be adding characters and more unexplained stuff. I have a feeling I will be disappointed with the finale.
Huge episode. Interesting how the "light cave", like the Island itself, can't be found by those looking for it. Plenty to absorb...though nothing was really beyond what we may have suspected. And crazy guardian mom leaves it very much to debate as to whether Jacob really is in the right.
