Screw spoilers. Sorry if somebody is stupid enough to read this before watching the episode. I agree. The guy at the beginning assumed Locke's identity after he died. This guy is immortal like Jacob. There's something that Jacob's been trying to accomplish. He brought the Black Rock (and presumably others) to the island to help him and they've all failed. Jacob brought the Losties to the island. As shown in the flashbacks, he had encounters with all of them prior to their arrival. Meanwhile, this other guy wants Jacob dead but for some reason is unable to do it himself. He needs to find a loophole. His loophole is assuming the identity of a now confirmed dead John Locke and manipulating Ben to kill Jacob for him. (ironic that Ben is the one who got manipulated) I believe Jacob is a good guy and this other guy is bad because Jacob was wearing a white shirt and this other guy was wearing black. Basic symbolism. I think it might also be possible that this other guy is really just a manifestation of the smoke monster. That's why the monster manifested itself as Alex and told Ben to do whatever "Locke" told him to do. It would also explain why he could take the shape of Locke (shapeshifting). It will be interesting to find out the reasons behind this feud and who this guy is and what he wants with Jacob out of the picture.
Nah, I think that's pretty much it. Jacob is God and the other guy is the Devil. Black and White. This also goes back to the backgammon game Locke was playing with Walt in Season 1. I guess they are fighting over the fate of man?
good points FFB. I didn't think about it being the time traveling light. Crazy....I can't wait till next season.
Same here. There is nothing close to this show. And for me, this is the best season finale in HISTORY. My goodness gracious..... SIDE NOTE: What do people think about the promos for "Flash Forward?" IDK....kinda reminds of this season of Lost with the whole time travel angle.
I'm pretty sure Jacob might have been the co pilot of 316. My thoughts on the Black shirt guy- first took over Christians dead persona and used him to get Locke to turn the wheel. All part of the loop hole.
He wasn't the co-pilot. That was the dude who played the bad dude in Saved By the Bell goes Hawaii (the movie they had... he played Kelly's bf who turned out to be the evil lawyer trying to help take over Kelly's grandfather's hotel). Who knew that Lost would bring up a discussion about Saved By the Bell goes Hawaii. Anyone?
I wonder if there is a more basic meaning to the phrase "loophole" Loop = time loop Hole = the thing dharma was drilling
Yep, I just got through watching that interview. Once they stopped talking about LOST I turned it off.
So, the theory here is that Jacob is good, other dude is evil and the show has a Bible-esque under tone? If that's the case, would Jacob have set this whole thing up knowing Ben would kill him thus sacrificing himself for the good of the island only to be resurrected?
personally im pretty sure this isnt anything to do with any type of theology. i just dont see it. i just dont think a lot of people that have been following this for 5 years would like it. nope just dont see it.
There has been a lot of internet talk about it having theological basis, but I don't buy it. The episode was really really good though. This loooooooong time between seasons kills me!
Richards response to "what lies in the shadow of the statue" was "Ille qui nos omnes servabit" which is Latin for “He who will protect/save us all.” Also, a black and white reference in the episode was that the title screen at the end what white with black lettering instead of the other way around. I don't know if there's any significance to that other it jiving with the white flash of light from the hydrogen bomb.
I don't think there is any doubt there is some biblical and theological influences happening here. The story of Issac and his sons, Jacob and Esau have some interesting aspects that could be incorporated into the Lost mythology. And I've heard the Island is Purgatory theory since the end of Season One. I wasn't too impressed with the episode until the final 30 minutes.....then it hits you like a ton of bricks. Wow!
And the girl called him Ricardo. Spanish name + Latin = Richard was originally a spanish priest or something. By Spanish I mean from spain and not mexico. I think at the end when Jacob whispers "they're coming" he means the the 1977 losties.
