Well infelizmente for you, it used to be a marketing ploy but has been turned political by the Suns. My next suggestions for them are the The Massive Deficit Suns, or The AbortSuns. No, you're right. Sports and politics don't mix.
Can only the players who support the political statement wear the jerseys and everyone else can wear the normal jerseys? I would be pissed if I were forced to represent something I didn't believe in.
I've seen on CCTV listings them listing the Rockets as the character for "rocket" and not a Mandarin transliteration of the sound of the word "Rockets". I don't have a Pinyin program on this computer so if someone could post it that would be appreciated. It seems like for CCTV, at least, they use the equivalent Chinese words for the teams both in listing and in broadcast.
As for if the Rockets wore "Los Rockets" it wouldn't make any difference to me. I don't agree with the law but I wouldn't root more or less for the Rockets if they decided to go as Los Rockets. Now if they went as "Les Rockets" I'm becoming a Spurs fan.
Sports and politics, especially racial politics, has a long, rich history. But who cares since racial profiling isn't relevant in Houston
Stupid punk ass PETA activists, making Ron Artest campaign for something he don't believe him cause he didn't feed his dog.
I am 99.9% Mexican. No, it would make NO difference to me. I think I completely agree with everything ASidd_1990 said.
we have sported the "Los Rockets" jerseys in the past for Latino Night in the NBA. i thought it was cool to see Scola representing his native tongue and home country. so now every team that participates is making a political statement? can't it just be in Appreciation of Hispanic Culture?
It's not a ploy. I get on commissar Stern for pandering to the kobes, but the league's players do wonderful things for their countries, like manu for unicef. I would be dissapointed if the rockets and other teams didn't show support social change, especially when they have programs like "Basketball without borders".
I recognize that Houston and the rest of the southwest has a unique history with Mexico and Spanish-speaking people, but I really think the whole idea is just a dumb marketing gimmick. It wouldn't make me root for the team any more or any less, but I think I'd find it a little irritating at least. Stick to hoops and winning games.
No difference, I would be too nervous about the playoff games to be worried about what jersey they would be wearing. RR
IMO its a fine law... and I honestly hope it stays. I don't think the team should get into the politics of it and if they did I may feel different about the Rockets organization but I still like the players.
I voted that i would route for them more, but i wouldn't route for them any less if they didn't. This board is like a sanctuary for most of us. Our political views are mostly checked when we log in and we all have the same thing in comon.... we love our Rockets. I am the biggest Obama supporter in the world and there are some on the board who probably take guns to "tea party" rallies. But we could sit next to each other at a game and hi five each other when the Rockets do well. Because at that moment, that's all that matters to us. I voted for the President, and gave money to his campaign. But if i had the choice between him for 4 more years and 4 Rockets Championships......... Richmond here i come!
I wish that all athletes and actors would do their craft and leave the political crap to Rush. I just see it as a ploy to the Hispanic community to sell the jerseys. Now, if they sell jerseys and don't pocket any profit but use it for some other program it would make it look a little better. But again, leave this stuff out of tax payer paid for arena's.
Why is Rush entitled to say political crap while others are not? Why should any of us (atheletes, actors, or otherwise) cede the political discussion to Rush?
My point is not that Rush is righ or wrong. It's that actors and athletes shouldn't use their celebrity to push their beliefs that's not what they are paid for. Rush and people like him are. That's what they do. People tune into them expecting to here their thoughts on such issues. Can athletes and actors be involved? Yes. Are they entitled to their opinion, absolutely. For me, I just think they need to stick to their specialty and not make political statements while doing what they are paid to do.
I just think the sad thing is that people don't realize how uninformed and out of touch many celebrities are. Fame is a dangerous thing to wield in a world full of impressionable sheep.
