Didn't the Chargers start out as the Los Angeles Chargers? Anyways, this stadium reminds me of that football video game that couldn't use real stadiums so they started making up weird and cool crap in the stands. Look at the lighting...only in LA.
The Bills might also be a target, though it looks like they're making moves to go no further than Toronto should Wilson pass away. I don't see the problem with the movie theater - great way to kill some time with the family and allow traffic to clear out after the game. I 've honestly wondered why more stadiums don't try and follow the airport model of becoming a mini-mall. Attached restaurants, sportsbars, stores, etc. Evan
It probably has a lot to do with the cost of rent. Airports have people in there all the time and a lot of them have time to kill so they'll eat and shop. A stadium's business is seasonal with concerts/events sprinkled in between, but I don't think independent shops would get nearly enough business to offset the cost of rent.
Now thinking about it that stadium would suck. Football wouldn't even be the main attraction, it would be hitting up the bars picking up chicks at the "Grey Goose Club" or getting a massage.
This kind of mixed-use development is actually becoming closer to the norm. The American Airlines Center in Dallas, for example, was as much a real estate deal for the area surrounding the arena as it was for a new place for the Mavericks to play (hence why Ross Perot, Jr. only owned the team long enough to get the arena deal done and then almost immediately unloaded them to Mark Cuban). The Phoenix Coyotes have a similar arrangement, playing in what will essentially be the centerpiece of a mall. And the Nets new arena in Brooklyn is a relatively small part of a big real estate deal. The renderings shown for this L.A. stadium appear to be a step beyond that (a lot of stuff physically in the stadium itself rather than right next to it), but it's not altogether unusual, in my opinion.
Los Angeles Chargers of San Diego? I figured years back thatd be the main way to appeal to an LA market. The "Grey Goose Club" is so contrived and obvious but its the only route they got left. The mixed-use venues makes sense really. If Disney can expand on their product having a "Downtown Disney" why not any other big business. Luxury boxes in stadiums are totally about schmoozing and looking lavish, and sometimes have little to do with the actual game. Still I agree the football atmosphere would be annoyingly BAD
