Nope, I'm a Texan, baby (Irish-American at that)! But c'mon and tell me that is not the worst line you've ever heard from a movie hero's mouth? Geez, you can have my freedom (not really) but I'll be damned if you can come boink my woman any time you feel like it.
Hayes- I may be going out on a limb here and dont really know if that was the line or not, but I pretty positive and some preliminary internet searches seem to confirm that the line was: "- Would you be willing to trade all the days from this day to that For one chance JUST ONE CHANCE to come back here and tell our enemies that you can take our lives, but you can never take our FREEDOM!!!!" Note, it is lives, not women that he says. That is why the line works. I'm going to see LOTR today or tomorrow. YAY!
Hmmm, could be. But even if you're correct that is still a pretty damn stupid line. I mean, does that make sense? Anyway, I think the movie is still way overrated. Is it really Oscar material? C'mon...
I'm not a Braveheart defender or anything, but I think it was very good, deserving, and is better than some of the other Best Picture winners of the last 15ish years (ala Titanic, Shakespeare in Love, The English Patient, and Gladiator to name a few). 1985 Out of Africa - Universal 1986 Platoon - Orion 1987 The Last Emperor - Columbia 1988 Rain Man - United Artists 1989 Driving Miss Daisy - Warner Bros 1990 Dances With Wolves - Orion 1991 The Silence of the Lambs - Orion 1992 Unforgiven - Warner Bros 1993 Schindler's List - Universal/Amblin 1994 Forrest Gump - Paramount 1995 Braveheart - Paramount 1996 The English Patient - Miramax 1997 Titanic - Paramount/20th Century Fox 1998 Shakespeare in Love - Miramax 1999 American Beauty - Dreamworks 2000 Gladiator - Dreamworks Will LOTR be nominated this year?
LOTR won (I think won; maybe just nominated) a Golden Globe for Best Picture. IMO, it should win the Oscar for Best Picture; it should at least get nominated for best picture at the Academy Awards. Hayes: I loved Braveheart. Its one of my favorite movies of all time. Of course, all my English family and friends hated, while the Scottish and to a lesser degree the Welsch sides of my family and friends loved it. I just returned from seeing LOTR for the second time. I loved it just as much as the first time I saw it.
i didn't really like the movie. the scenes and costumes were all beautiful but i hated most of the actors. i guess the part i like best was the beginning, the rings origin.
Although I liked most of the films on this list, I wouldn't really call any of them my favorites with the possible exception of Silence of the Lambs. Give me the hardcore mindbending drama like The Usual Suspects and I'm hooked!!! I guess I'm just shallow like that or maybe it was watching Forrest Gump on acid that did me in!!
Looking at the list I'd definitely agree that the Oscars have been in a slump since '95 (suprisingly with Braveheart starting the downward spiral) with the exception of American Beauty. I will say that a lot of the recognition Braveheart got was for stuff like costumes, and cinematography etc etc, so the poor dialogue (which was my beef) really is separate from that.
Why the hell did I click on this thread? I haven't seen the movie yet, so I had to to some serious scrolling to get away from all the SPOILERS. At least I can comment on the Oscar list - Platoon Rain Man Silence of the Lambs Forest Gump Braveheart (Excellent) American Beauty Gladiator ...all very good movies. If LOTR is up there with them, it should get consideration.
also the part where they killed the uruk-hais. it was just too easy. i think the archer just poked them with his puny arrow in close combat.
I saw this movie yesterday, and I was pleasantly suprised. In all honesty, having never read the trilogy and this genre being of little interest to me, I likely would never have seen it if I weren't encouraged by my sister and cousins. In hindsight, its actually a good thing I read this thread after watching the movie, or else you all would have just raised my expectations too high! But having watched it, the movie was really really well done. Acting was superb, scenery and landscape unbelievable, fights and effects outstanding and the story line obviously original. It was prolly a little too dark for my tastes and maybe a little too long, but its definatley one of the better movies I've seen. Azim da Dream
I thought it was really well-done, aside from the minor quirks I have from some of the changes, but hey - it's not meant to be exact. The only problem was that there were these two guys right behind us (we had good seats, it's just that the theater completely filled up) that kept on 'whispering' (note the quotes) to each other what was going to happen next (I know since I've read the book, but it was just so annoying having a guy in what he thinks is whispering "it's strider!" "hey, don't they blindfold them?!" "here comes the part with the bridge!")
yo fba34- Go poke yourself in the eye with a puny arrow all the way to your brain. it probably wont hurt because hey, its too easy man.
Anyone out there wondering how theya re going to make the Ents look believable next year. They almost seem better preserved in the mind...
I just came back from seeing FOTR.....OMG what a friggin good movie! I don't often say this, but this is the best film I've ever seen in my 20 years!!!!! Acting was great, scenery was awesome, special effects were excellent. Sure, it didn't go exactly as the book, (parts were left out, etc...) but for a 3hr movie it did an outstanding job in re-telling the greatest story ever told. Some things which I cannot wait to see are: - Ents - More Gollum action (he looked awesome in the few scenes he appeared in) - More battle scenes vs. Orcs and basically everything else that was in the books.
Just a note to those of you who need more character development, read the books. It would be impossible to fully flesh-out all the characters in this movie and still get to where they need to get in 6 hours, much less in 3 hours. Chance, can't wait to see how Treebeard looks...should be cool. To those that have gone already, how did they manage to make a big part for Arwen? she had a very small part in the story..not enough to make it worth pumpin Liv being in the movie. I wanted to see this from the beginning, but after going thru this thread...I can't wait!! There are too many of you pumping this up for it to suck. Clarification from earlier in the thread...Aragon is known by many names, Ranger and Stryder are just a couple of them. Once again, reading the books would fill in any points in the movie you didn't quiet understand.
