Ya, I generally stay away from them. I'm mostly an FPS gamer. scary what mmorpgs do to people.

I feel the same way. There's no MMORPG I've played since WoW that was as fun as WoW. I've played D&D Online, Guild Wars, EVE Online, and a few others. EVE was awesome and tactically/mentally was a level above every other game I've played, but still wasn't as fun as WoW. EVE was more like a 2nd job.

I bought LOTR when it came out. It was a letdown, but it may have changed since I played it. They've been trying to give out all kinds of promos for the past few months to get people to come back and play it, but I guess they settled on the "free" model instead. I'm guessing for "free" it can't be all that bad and I may give it a whirl.

I'm going to try switching up servers... Lag blows...

Edit* Nevermind, I didn't know that you can't bring your character to a different server... Hopefully it gets better...

Certain times of the day, it's going to be laggy. Silkroad Online was the same way.

I remember playing a Minstrel in beta, was a fun game to level up in, loved the little instance runs and the story was pretty sweet. My only worry was the endgame which was probably not 1% of WoW so I never bought the retail version.

Might see what I've been missing all these years since I've been unsubbed from WoW for almost 2 years now.

Wow, I can't believe I remembered my login from way back when I played over 3 years ago. Woo hoo, I have a "premium account".

The game apparently supports DirectX 11, too. Neat.

Sorry I'm getting in late here, I'm a lifetime subber to LOTRO. I'm on Arkenstone. My main character is a Captain and his name is Chenzhen.

Most of my characters are a variation of Chen-something. Probably can just search for Chen.

Feel free to join me on that server.

    -------------------------------------------

So let me break down the free to play for you guys.

You'll be limited unless you pay a monthly fee which gives you the whole game while you are subbed.

Most likely most of you are going to be F2P or Premium, which he differences really aren't that big. You will basically be able to play the game up to around level 20-25ish. At that point, you can still go along the Epic quest line (story of the books), but you will run into a wall b/c the quests get too high of level.

As far as other quests, you will have to buy quest packs to advance your character if you don't want to sit around killing enemies/monsters/animals all day.

So it's not FREE if you plan to play for any extended period of time. On the other hand, it's not too bad. Instead of paying 15 bucks or so a month, you can just reach the point where you have no more quests to do and then go buy the next quest back for x points (not sure the translation to money, maybe 5 bucks?). You own those quests now, and never have to pay for them again with any new characters to make (if you can make more characters based on your F2P/Premium level).

So it's a buy what content you want and conveniences you want play style (bag space, bank space, etc.). You don't have to sub every month and feel that NEED to log in and play or you are wasting money.

Oh another big thing to consider is once you guys get in you'll notice you have virtues and different traits. For VIPs they are all unlocked and available as you level. For F2Ps and Premiums, you only have like 2, and as you level and unlock them, you have to use Turbine Points to be able to use them. You're going to want to do that if you play the game. Just another heads up if you are considering if you want to do a monthly sub vs pay as you go comparison.

Yep, that's how I felt. When I tried to make an account on the site and the ID was taken, I was like.....no way someone else has it.

After the install, took me 2 guesses for the PW....

According to this, you can play to lvl 50 in the free version.
