Why would Memphis throw in the 33rd pick? We also got their 2nd round pick the next year (later sent back to Memphis along with Francis). There's no incentive for them to include those as they're non-guaranteed contracts. Memphis picked for us. Morey wanted Dorsey and spoke highly of his ability to contribute immediately. We specifically requested those picks. If Dorsey were just some throw-in, Morey wouldn't have signed him to a four-year deal. We would have either traded him or held his rights until he was ready like Maarty Leunen.
Yes, BUT the player the Rockets drafted never suited up for them and was involved in several trades to land Artest. In hindsight, it would've been nice to have Jordan as a backup to Yao or a starter now, but the Rockets were in a "win now" mode last year and Artest gave the Rockets a better chance of winning than DJ or any rookie available at the time.
Would've been nice to use a 2nd round pick on DeJuan Blair instead. Looks like the Spurs got another for sure steal again...
Actually, Dorsey was the rebounder leader in summer league. Not sure why Adelman didn't give him playtime.
P.S. David Anderson sucks.......the 5 spot is going to make me cry this season. Oh Well, this year is mostly going to be spent developing young players anyways.... Hopefully we get a lottery pick to pair with the return of Yao Ming next season and a big splash FA with McGrady's contract coming off the bucks. BTW....did I mention that David Anderson SUCKS. 7 feet of charmin under the rim this year.
Thats for sure. But on the subject of Dorsey, with his S/L play you would think they would of gave him a chance in the pre season. Unless he's injured or something.
Blair is as good as a rebounder, but also has MUCH more offensive game, and better feel for the game, as well as a MUCH higher ceiling.
Blair was 6-15 tonight...... I would have liked to see Dorsey matched up....but Dorsey will play tomorrow and Hayes will probably rest. DD
What's too early to tell? The guy was a beast on the boards in college....just like Dorsey, but is a MUCH better offensive player....unlike Dorsey. Which is why he has higher potential. Also I know he "had" a knee problem, it's not like Dorsey hasn't had health problems either.
Amazing, Doctors say he should be ok as long as his quads remain strong to keep the knee stable.....unreal. He reminded me of a young Moses Malone....just getting every loose ball....I would have liked to see him matched up with Dorsey though. He was killing Anderson and Hayes...just killing them......Landry did OK against him though. DD
I would like to see what Dejuan does against a frontcourt that's not undersized (Hayes) or underweight(Andersen). I don't think he can come close to his performance against other teams.
If a guy with no knees can do that to us in the post we're in for one hell of a disappointing season.
How many true centers are there in the league today?....not many. Just like Landry and Hayes, Blair will make a good living just on hustle alone. Plus like Hayes...his big body will allow him to defend against bigger players and deny them from getting good post position. Let's put it this way....he's a upgrade over that wimp Fabricio Oberto.
Depends on what your expectations for the season are... I'm expecting good development of our youngsters and maybe a lottery pick.
Even by today's NBA standards, the Rockets frontcourt is REALLY, REALLY small. And one good rebounding game against us in the 1st preseason game isn't exactly a good measurement of true ability. The list of preseason studs who never get stuck on regular season rotations is quite long.
DeJuan Blair doesn't have elite hieght, but he isn't a small guy......he's 6'7 and about 270 pounds, plus he has very long arms for his height. As long as he stays healthy, he's going to be able to hold his own on the boards. Also I don't expect him to be a major contributor for the Spurs this season, they are a veteran team and Pop usually tends to not play rookies much, but with his physical nature (which Pop loves) he'll find playing time eventually....he'll contribute sooner than you think.
Looks like you are the one who is missing the point Leeb. The Blazers drafted Dorsey, while the Clippers were the ones who drafted Jordan. How can Morey get the Clippers to cough up Jordan when he was trading with the Blazers? Drafts by nature are free flowing and dynamic, and as a result most trades are rarely finalized ahead of time. Considering Dorsey was probably just a result of Morey "haggling" in order to get added value for Batum, then I would guess his inclusion was probably a last-minute thing. Up until the trade was finalized the Blazers probably thought they drafted Dorsey for themselves. And besides, so what if we passed up on Jordan? Do you know how many 20 year old big men become eligible every single year? 99.9% of them turn out to be busts, just ask the Sonics they cashed lottery picks for a 7 ft project every single year before the Pritchard era. Robert Swift, Saer Sene etc. how many of those guys panned out? You are like some kind of ultimate risk taker, you keep suggesting high-risk players and saying we should have gotten that guy but the fact is 1) You don't lose anything if you happen to be wrong and more importantly 2) You operate from hindsight. Unlike Jordan who was a relative unknown, Dorsey had a great pedigree, he won all sorts of college awards, he was dominant in college and the stuff he excelled at (defense, rebounding) were things that translated in the next level. Dorsey was the correct, safe choice, a lot like getting the sure 300k over a 40% chance to get 2 million in a game show. Unlike big men, success rate for wings are much better, and Donte Greene had an even better upside ranking than Jordan at the time. The combo of Greene and Dorsey was a great one at the time: you had your high risk, high potential player and you have a nice "insurance" pick. DM was able to parlay that Batum pick into a shot for a title and eventually a 2nd round exit for the first time in a gazilion years, I'd say that was a pick well spent so stop crying over it already.
