This is why Houston fans get a bad rap. Think Red Sox fans or Cubs fans have given up on their teams? Up until '95 were you complaining about how Houston teams always tantalize but never deliver?
I'm not a fairweather fan AT ALL when it comes to the Rockets and Texans, so I'm not gonna hear any of that BS. I wasn't fairweather with the Astros, really. Like I said, I always liked 'em and really paid closer attention last year when they made their run. Lots of people on this site for one were more interested (due to their historic run), so don't act like some of you weren't. After last season, though, the Astros reminded me that they always fail to really accomplish anything really great. So, I'll stay away from the Astros thread, but don't compare to most of the idiotic bandwagoners in this city - I wouldn't be on this site for one thing if I didn't totally live and breathe the Houston Rockets.
That's the funny thing about the fairweather fans here, they are usually in denial. Are they like that in other places too?
See I don't view last year as the Astros failing or blowing it. I see them defying the odds, making in improbable run to the postseason, exercising some demons in winning their first postseason series against Atlanta, then taking the best team in the NL to game 7 of the NLCS. 1 pitch by Miceli and an Edmonds catch pretty much took our chances away so I'd hardly call that a failure. You want a good dose of failure, how bout the Cubs, the Red Sox (before last season) and the 13 consecutive division crowns and only ONE WS title Atlanta Braves.
So because it didn't work out a few times, it won't ever work for the rest of the history of the franchise? That's great logic, but someone should've told that to Boston last year... I guess they failed to get your memo. Did we have a good team last year? Absolutely, but the casual Houston baseball fan has a horrible habit of labeling Astro losses as underachieving because they assume the Astros should always win. That's false. The Cardinals were a more talented team last year, and we did a tremendous job to even get to seven games in that series. There have only been four or five truly great teams in this franchise's history, and when you're dealing with a sample size that small, you can't really label it underachieving to not win a championship... there's too many good teams and too much randomness. You could label it underachieving if they had no postseason success at all, but after last year that is no longer an issue. What's more amazing to me, however, is the faith you have in the "soon to be great" Texans. They haven't qualified for the postseason - haven't even posted a .500 record, for that matter - and you somehow find hope in watching them, but can't find hope in watching the only team in the last 10 years to bring any sort of playoff success to Houston? To each his own, I suppose.
Don't waste your guy's breath on this idiot. He obviously should be in a town like Sacramento or San Antonio, where basketball is the only major sport. If you can't learn to appreciate or respect all the teams we've got... you might as well be living in Canada for all we care... you can still root for the Rockets (and access this site) from there.
If anything, the Astros are volatile (sp?). As fast as their hitting got better, it could collapse just as quickly. They might have dug themselves into a hole that's too big if they go through another slump. Anyways...I'll freely admit to being a fairweather fan. I'll probably get excited if they get in a playoff race and watch a couple games in September, but if they go on another hitting drought and fall out of contention, I probably won't follow them closely. It's really nothing against the Astros, though. My appreciation for basketball has grown and eclipsed my love for baseball ever since I started frequenting this fantastic web site. Baseball, as well as football, just don't excite me anymore. My passion for football died when the Oilers left town. I loved the Oilers more than life itself when I was a kid. I think the only Texans game I've watched in its entirity is the first one against the Cowboys. Anyways, go 'Stros...I guess
with all due respect, this is the very definition of a bandwagon fan. if they win that one game, you're on, baby. they're champs and you're hooked. they don't, and you're done with them. you jump right off. you just defined yourself as a bandwagon fan, and then asked us not to call you that. you may not be a bandwagon rockets or even texans fan. but my guess is that if the texans end up with a franchise history similar to the oilers, you won't be rooting for them very long, either.
The Astros have showed what kind of team they are-a great team with a lot of heart. I'm looking foward to some great baseball games. Go National League!!!
Hey, honestly we don't care about you and your story. We are here enjoying our team and you must know that we are stros' fans so get the butt out of here!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's been great, coming back from the dead and being in a Wild Card challenge. I fear this run is like an NBA game where a team comes all the way back from 20 down but runs out of gas at the end. I'll be rooting for the Good Guys, but I don't have my rose colored glasses on...yet.
Sure I'm enjoying it. Looking forward to Clemens pitching and Clemens in the field, a latter day Howe family picnic!
I am impressed with the Astros comeback because they could have easily have thrown in the towel on the entire season. But they have fought back and put the Clemens-Yankees rumors out to pasture. The matchups with the Braves will be key to getting into the postseason.
