You just learned the cardinal sin. Don't EVER mention racism on this board or you will have a thread that goes out of control.
OK, I don't know if this link has been posted on the BBS yet. I just found it. It is a cartoon with Yao and Barkley from a Chinese website. It is hysterical to watch! Enjoy! link to cartoon with Yao and Barkley It probably deserves its own thread if no one has posted about it yet.
I think they have posted it twice, and i saw it monthes ago, but still it's a kewl and funny flash animation, if you know chinese it's even better, basically it's a chinese pop song with funny comments on sir Charles (and note that Yao's favorate player is Charles, that's why in the end it's said Yao forgave Charles)
Being black has its advantage and we use our blackness to our advantage? Well, I am racking my brain to figure out when my blackness got me an advantage for a job, promotion or opportunity. Go to the inner cities and tell these hungry, struggling kids that their blackness gave them the advantage/opportunity to grow up in a great ghetto.
Ok, for any too young or to unaware of Charles Barkley, you're missing out. About 10 years ago just after he went to Phoenix he exploded in a post-game interview. I don't remember the details, whether he was ejected from the game, I don't know. He just got really irritated with the usual obligatory dumb questions reporters ask a media magnet and said: "All white people are evil". He was talking about a ref. and at the same time baiting any ignorant reporter. The quote was spread by the Associated Press and was in print in most American newspapers while knowledgeable sportswriters were home and in bed. The media and public outrage over the statement didn't even last until he woke up in the morning (probably, knowing Charles). East coast writers were naturally the first to awake the next morning with the news, Er, uh he's married to a white woman with whom he has kids and compliments his in-laws and admires them, and don't you just think he was just pissed off enough to make dumb**s reporters look stupid? Sir Charles is the first to admit he only does his homework when he has to, and with Yao the homework was extremely difficult. After watching (and re-watching) tapes from the WBCs I firmly believed Yao was a pick any team had to make given the few quality centers in the NBA. But Yao has surprised me in everyway conceiveable. For a Chinese fan to have expected this, I admit it's possible, but for anyone with any sense of NBA history what Yao does now is unprecedented. And no one in their right mind could have expected it this soon. I applaud the sensitivity to racism, but in Charles' case it's misguided. The point made earlier about Charles' remarks about Yao not being racist is also totally accurate. If you're Asian and relate to him that's great, I guess. If you're Chinese and root for him that's totally understandable. If you haven't been watching the game for about 20 years or so, you have no idea of how special what Yao's doing in the NBA right now. Bashing Yao-bashers is fair game here. Be sure you're not being nationalistic when you do so.
It's my fault for stinking it up. I was trying to use some Charles style humor here... Barkley isn't racist. His jokes are more to defuse the sensitive areas that is racism. Outside of the cameras, he's a nice and generous man. Charles' persona is as racist as the movie Rush Hour, aka one big ignorant pile of ****. Racism and ignorance are two different things. That fortune cookie incident was pretty damn wierd. It was another example of ignorance that needs to be set straight. Just bring it out...without the tempers. It looks like everyone needs some good venting here. It helps the blood pressure... Calling an entire group racist is like the pot calling the kettle black. Tell them that they're being racist and get the ball rolling on knowing these people.
