    Why not?

    If Houston were to trade a second round pick to Memphis for Tayshaun Prince, using its traded player exception, how long would Houston have to wait to include Prince with other players/picks in a deal for Bledsoe? 30 days? Or can such a trade happen immediately after acquiring Prince?

    Again, thanks in advance. I am just trying to figure out what Morey's options are here.

    2 months for traded players (technically the rule is in relation to packaging them with other players, but that is what yoiu're suggesting), 30 days is for people signed via draft rights

    I thought you could trade players again on that 1st day?

    Either way, as I pointed out, no need to waste the TPE in acquiring someone for salary matching. That is what Papa's contract is for....

    Why exactly is the sort of trade suggested below impermissible?

    Are we sure Houston can't do that?

    I am operating under the assumption that Kostas Papanikolaou is expected to very ably fill the 2012-13 Carlos Delfino role. I do not expect him to get traded, at least not this season.

    You are correct, sir, I found the explanation in Larry Coon's salary cap faq page, #84, if anyone is interested.

    I now agree with Bima Thug's projection, and also agree with Dr. Neugebauer that we may see Kostas Papanikolaou as part of a deal for Eric Bledsoe. I suspect this might work:

    New Orleans first round pick
    Kostas Papanikolaou
    Alonzo Gee's non-guaranteed contract
    Clint Capela
    Isaiah Canaan

    for

    Eric Bledsoe (signed and traded)
    Shavlik Randolph (filler, will likely be waived prior to the beginning of the regular season)

    That is a nice package right there.

    Also, keep in mind that other teams may get involved, AND that Houston may not even be Bledsoe's final destination. For example:

    New Orleans first round pick, Kostas Papanikolaou, Alonzo Gee, Clint Capela, and Isaiah Canaan (OR Nick Johnson) to Phoenix;

    Eric Bledsoe (signed and traded) and Shavlik Randolph to Boston;

    Rajon Rondo to Houston

    And we may see that Houston trade package diverted to Milwaukee for Larry Sanders, or to Indiana for Roy Hibbert.

    THUS, do not assume that a Bledsoe trade involving Houston results in Bledsoe winding up in a Rockets uniform

    Questions:

    1) Can the Jason Terry trade not happen until 9/15? Since that is the date when Gee and Hopson are eligible to be traded? This gives Daryl Morey 7 days to find a third team to get involved here somehow.

    2) IS Kostas Papanikolaou eligible to be traded, starting today? This would mean that he signed his contract with Houston on 8/9. Did he?

    If Papanikolaou can be traded by 9/15, then this could be the date when the Terry trade evolves into something bigger, presumably a trade for either Eric Bledsoe or Rajon Rondo. 9/15 = next Monday! BUT, let's please confirm that Papanikolau IS, in fact, eligible to be traded by that date. Since a deal for Bledsoe or Rondo may have to include Papanikolaou in order for the salaries to add up.

    If Papanikolaou gets traded before he ever plays for the Rockets, it will be a wake-up call to life in the NBA.

    Keith Bogans fits the TPE and he's entirely non-guaranteed. Brandon Bass fits and he's actually an expiring contract that can ball a little bit at a position of need. Ersan Ilyasova fits the TPE and he could actually turn around his career hitting bombs for us for a couple months.

    Only way Johnson goes is if Houston is getting in return a big time player. In comparison I would put Johnson on if not slightly above Jeremy Lamb (the centerpiece of the Harden trade)

    I hope Johnson stays and hope Rockets scrap this TPE and some of these picks and get good expiring contracts too really add depth and experience too the bench.

    Go into next year with about 8-9 mil in cap space, a furthering MLE, and the rights to any expiring contract that can play well.

    I say stand pat for now. Rockets can reek some havoc near the deadline.

    If Bledsoe does not sign by Oct 1st, nothing happens. He remains a RFA and can still negotiate with any team. It just means he can no longer sign the one-yr contract, unless PHO extends it, which rarely happens since they have no incentive to do so.
