I think the MLS has a Designated Player rule that you can sign couple or three players that exceed the minimum budget but everyone else has to be under it. https://www.mlssoccer.com/league/official-rules/mls-roster-rules-and-regulations That's why you have major stars with the most salaries in Europe and other special countries, you dun have it in the rest of the world.
The competitiveness of the NBA is at an all-time low. You see opposing players hangout, don't care if they lose, don't play defense,.. this will make it worse. This will be a grown man aau league
Prospect loaning could be intriguing. The league would have to figure out some compensation for the bad teams allowing a player to develop on their minutes. D-league minutes aren't NBA minutes. Star loaning doesn't happen in soccer, and it sure as hell would never happen in the NBA. A team with a superstar under contract isn't gonna allow him to shine and risk injury on another team. It would be a fiasco waiting to happen.
It works in soccer because the player pool is very very international and there are top leagues all over Europe. NBA is no where near as international and it is the only "top" league in the world. That said... could work for rookies, Joe Chee could be racking up NBA minutes in PHX, but doesn't make sense for "star" players. But that is essentially what the G-League is trying to do.
That's not true and it's because of my previous post. 1) Soccer is very very very international and 2) there are multiple top leagues in Europe. Neither of those things are true for NBA which means it doesn't work. But to your point that loaning star players doesn't happen, there has been many star players loaned out to their "home" countries "best" teams which is possible because of the two reasons I gave. A very recent example, James Rodriguez, from Real Madrid on loan to Bayern Munich. He is a young star in his prime that was loaned out. There have been others huge stars on loan, Zlatan, Falcao, Torres, etc... You also have other young star players who leave for free to go home, ala Pogba. Again, soccer is a different animal because you have at least 3 or 4 NBA level leagues and the players are from all over the world.
True. You probably have to transfer 100 NBA players to the best leagues in Europe to get that loaning thing started.
Loaning works best when there is no direct competition for the World Championship or High Lottery picks.
