Wow, I've completely forgotten about a lot of my favorite movies. I need to make room for Fargo and Fight Club somewhere.
Everytime I think about it a little longer, I come up with a movie I have forgotten...but here is what I have so far, in order. 10) American History X - Ed Norton's best work...great movie (9) Donnie Brasco - Actually liked this wise-guy movie better than Goodfellas (8) Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - I didn't believe Jim Carrey could act until this movie...beautifully written and filmed (7) The Terminal - Very underrated film. To me, the quintessential "feel good" movie (6) The Big Lebowski - Easily my favorite comedy of all time. So many quoteable lines I lose count (5) Braveheart - No, the historical inconsistencies don't bother me, it could have been total fiction and still would be good (4) Cinderella Man - Boxing may be a bad sport in reality, but it lends itself to the screen quite well (3) Shawshank Redemption - Should be on damn near everyone's top 10 list. Echoing what someone else said earlier...flawless (2) LOTR: Fellowship of the Ring - Best of the 3 and still my favorite. Sucked me in right from the start. (1) Gattaca - Not on many people's list, but has been my favorite movie since I first saw it. Every once in a while, it does me good to be reminded that no matter what future obstacles may be put in your path by you or others, you can ALWAYS overcome them if you believe and try hard enough. Honorable Mentions: Matrix, Big Fish, Indiana Jones: The Last Crusade, Pulp Fiction, Tombstone and Seven.
I'm seeing quite a few wussy movies in this thread. Here is my awesome list: 1. The Good, The Bad and The Ugly -- The best western ever made. I can watch this over and over without getting bored. There are so many great moments. 2. Conan the Barbarian -- Seriously. The action scenes are top-notch, the soundtrack is one of the best ever produced for a movie, and James Earl Jones' Thulsa Doom is one of the most captivating villains ever. Most importantly, the movie is true to the spirit of Howard's novels, unlike the heaping dog turd of a sequel that followed. 3. Rocky -- Not much I can say here except that it is a true classic that will remain timeless. 4. Bloodsport -- I don't care if it's steeped in 80s-ness. I don't care if the cheese factor is off the charts. I don't care that it stars Jean-Claude Van Dam and everything that implies. I don't care that the middle 20 minutes of the movie are ruined by lame love scenes and a corny chase through Hong Kong. Find me a more entertaining movie than Bloodsport, I dare you. You can't, because there are none. I make a point to watch this at least once a year. KUMITE! KUMITE! KUMITE! KUMITE! 5. The Outlaw Josey Wales -- Another wonderful western (I love westerns). Although I generally prefer the Sergio Leonne films over Eastwood's American westerns, this one is a true gem. 6. Glory -- A lot of star power in this one, but Morgan Freeman carries it, in my opinion. Without a doubt my favorite war movie. 7. Forrest Gump -- This movie is a lot of fun, especially the first time you see it. It's not as entertaining after multiple viewings, though, unfortunately. 8. Roadhouse -- The only movie that comes close to the sheer entertainment value of Bloodsport. Even though you may have seen it a million times before, whenever this comes on TV, it is impossible to just flick past. You have to stop and watch at least a few scenes. Then, a few more. Before you know it, you have watched the whole movie again for the 10th time. It's like, "Cool, Roadhouse is on again! BAM! Take that, you big redneck! Patrick Swayze is such a badass." 9. Kill Bill: Volume 1 -- Volume 2 was garbage, but the first one was sheer genius. A perfect mix of music, action, quirky art and cool poses. Love it. 10. The Matrix -- Sequels were garbage, but the original was brilliant, even with that meathead Keanu Reeves as the star. Big ups to Lawrence Fishburn, who carries this movie. Honorable Mention: Terminator 2, Predator, Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, High Plains Drifter, Unforgiven, Top Gun (admit it; you cried when Goose died), Octopussy, Rocky 4, Shawshank Redemtion (yeah, yeah, it's good.. but enough already), Clash of the Titans!, The Princess Bride, Kickboxer.
