Thought I'd bump this. While I've lived in Austin for 28 years, I was born and raised in Houston, with loads of family and friends there, mostly in the Southeast part of town, around Hobby and out towards Clear Lake, League City, and other places that aren't fun to be in right now. My sister's antique shop by the Strand has had 5 feet of water in it. Anything that opens in the Southeast would be good news to pass on to those folks!
Star Pizza in the heights is open again today, as well as the JITB on Waugh near Allen Prkway as well as Vincent's and Nino's Restaurants near Dallas and Waugh
Hooter's in Pasadena is open. I just got back from there and enjoyed some ice cold Miller Lite along with a bently buffalo chicken sammich. Yuuuuuummmm.
dude you absolutely SUCK, Buffalo Chicken sandwiches are the BOMB. blah, only if gas wasn't so damn scarce around here I might take that drive.
Here is a helpful database of what's open. http://creator.zoho.com/ntalect/check-conditions-by-zip/view/2/
Blockbuster by S. Main and OST is open. no lines there. I found it more convenient to buy drinks there to. Water, vitamin water, sodas in 20oz or 2 liters. A bit pricier but much easier than sitting in line to get into a Kroger or HEB.
Texas Wings Sports Grill in Pearland was open today. http://www.texaswingssportsgrill.com/index.html There was also another restaurant (dont remember the name) on the same plaza which was open as well.
Last night I had dinner at Gringo's on I45 and Fuqua. Cadillac Margaritas ftw. Joe's Crab Shack and Casa Ole which are in the same area were also open.
I am very sorry to hear about your sister's shop. I can tell you that League City isn't a bad place to be right now. We have water, power, and stores and eateries are opening back up. Last night we were able to get a balanced hot meal at Cracker Barrel.
I'm glad to hear that. I hope something close to my mother opens up. She's not far from Hobby and won't drive on a freeway, bless her heart. 85 years young, but still 85! Still no power, although I was hoping being close to the airport might speed things up. Not yet! Won't let me come down and bring her to Austin, either.
All kinds of stuff around Willowbrook and up 249 are open. We ate at Willie's last night near 249 and Cypresswood.
I believe the movie theatre at Weslayan and Richmond is open, and the fast food and other shops adjacent to it.
I just drove down to Hobby to check on my place at 11 am. I saw one open gas station on the NE corner of I-45 and Clearwood running on a generator. She should be able to get some non-pershable items there. There are also some taco trucks along the feeder at the same intersection, but I would be very afraid of the meat, due to refrigeration and power problems from the Hurricane. The whole area has many downed large trees that are hindering electrical restoration. I doubt centerpoint will make much progress this week until the trees get cut up and removed from the area.
