I was going to post this in the Liz Cheney thread but Murkowski might deserve her own.

She's overall been Conservative but has shown the ability to cross the aisle and cross ideology when it comes to issues like health care. She also doesn't appear to be as waffling and "concerned" as Susan Collins. Most impressive though is that in a very Republican state she has been able to take on the MAGA wing of her party and win even as a write in candidate.

Alaska is a very small population state and her name helped her win but could her brand of what looks like "compassionate conservatism" win nationwide?

she’s been entrenched and established in Alaska for awhile now…that might win her reelection there, but actually beating Trump himself in a primary, no, I don’t see it…she will not get the votes

she’s probably viewed as a RINO who has a safe space in Alaska

the Republican Party has been taken over by MAGA

Those are good points and I agree nationally she doesn't have a chance with the current MAGA party but if the party were to split could Murkowski put herself up as an alternative to Trumpism that could also appeal across ideology?

Lisa Murkowski is a great example of how open primaries reduce partisanship and produce better candidates.

It's not that Murkowski has broad appeal, it's that her state's election system allows more people to vote and more people to vote their conscience.

she could put herself up as an alternative, I just don’t think it would get very far

What does she really have to offer to those on the left?

it wasn’t too long ago that someone like Sarah Palin was the craziest Republican out there…now, she seems sane and competent compared to what MAGA routinely trots out

it’s crazy how much things have spiraled

Murkowski is a product of a state that does not follow the politics of the rest of the country. For example, Alaska is the only state where coalition governments are successfully formed and Alaska routinely elects independents to its legislature. The Alaska house is currently governed by a coalition of Democrats, independents and moderate Republicans and these types of coalitions have been formed in both the house and senate in the past. Furthermore, the previous governor of Alaska was a moderate Republican who ran with a Democratic LG on the ticket (as a proper coalition ticket).

Both Murkowski and Don Young (Alaska's former congressman who recently passed away) consistently vote near the middle of Congress. Sure Alaska also has its share of crazies like Palin that vote with like the rest of the Republican Party. but Alaska is just a weird state that produces non-traditional electoral outcomes.

Even their new election system is completely unique. They do a joint primary (like California) but they vote on the top 4 candidates using rank choice voting.

She has NO shot at winning the GOP primary. None. Trump will run an insult clinic on the debate stage and be such a masogonystic ******* to her that she stands no chance to not be embarrassed off the stage.

If she ran as an independent or a Democrat she's only going to be running with the same platform and attracting the same voting base as Joe Biden... but with more baggage that'll turn off progressives, and open up the possibility of a Ralph Nader spoiler from the left.

However I do think highly of Murkowski and think Chuck Schumer and Joe Biden should have been courting her much much much more aggressively than Joe freaking Manchin. I actually think she's much more likely to make principled votes to save Democracy than that corrupt a$$hat.

But no Murkowski has no shot at winning a nomination with either party. The next candidate after Biden needs to hold the Dem coalition along the lines of Progressives to Moderate/Conservative leaning suburban women... and the future of this countries voting power that changes the game IMO is a candidate who has deep deep ties to the growing Latino population and can turbo charge that untapped voting base.
