I'm not arguing "upper middle" or "middle" class. This is just more information on Lin household finances. Though the Lins live in Palo Alto, their family home is a modest ranch, with roof tiles that are slightly warped and a small, patchy front lawn. There is no basketball hoop in the driveway and the house is on a block that features tightly packed homes, chipped fences and utility poles with fading signs posted on them about a missing orange tabby cat named Emma. As devout Christians, Shirley and Lin Gie-ming preached humility to their children, and they spoke from experience. After being widowed, Lin Gie-ming’s mother raised five children on her husband’s savings, she said. For Shirley and her husband, money became tighter as their family grew. Not long after they bought their home there, their debts forced Lin Gie-ming to file for bankruptcy in 1995, according to court records. After a reorganization of finances, the case was dismissed 11 months later. More info at http://www.taipeitimes.com/News/editorials/archives/2012/02/28/2003526535/1. It was initially published in New York Times but NYT's website is down.
Thanks. I'm not go back on my statement that they were a upper middle class family because middle class is different in each region. both of his parents are university educated, they could support 5 kids and send them to college and live in palo alto. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palo_Alto,_California this is the average income: According to a 2007 estimate, the median income for a household in the city was $119,046, and the median income for a family was $153,197. From watching the movie, they didn't look like they were poor as dirt like the Agees in Chicago having no electricity to cook beans with. At no point in Linsanity did I ever feel sorry for the Lins. I felt horrible for the families in Hoop Dreams cause they had poverty and drug problems. The Lins were fine, they had no such problems. My point being (I respect you are a Lin fan by the way) is that money WAS NOT A REASON for Jeremy's pursuit of basketball.
There are many movies about black kids in economically struggling families trying to make it to NBA. I saw several and enjoyed them as documentary films. Actually, the BB documentary I enjoyed most was about a white guy from a small town near Boston who made it to NBA and then got into drugs, etc. The movie was in 30 for 30 ESPN film. The fact that Lin was a college BB player trying out for NBA IN ITSELF was interesting or unique enough for a small time documentary maker. The fact that the Lin family was middle or upper middle class has no bearing for me on whether the movie is worth seeing. Actually, it's very rare for a kid from a wealthy background to make it to NBA. For example, if a billionaire's son made it to NBA, I would see a documentary on that.
The movie is called "30 for 30: Unguarded". Synopsis: "This unflinching documentary chronicles the turbulent life of Chris Herren, a young NBA star whose profound drug addiction wrecked his basketball career. Now sober, Herren shares his cautionary tale at high schools, rehab centers and other venues." Out of all basketball documentaries I have seen, I enjoyed this one the most.
I agree with your point - "money WAS NOT A REASON for Jeremy's pursuit of basketball." If his objective is to make money, he would have chosen a different profession - a more "realistic" path. That is one of the reasons why I am interested in the movie. It is just not that common for an Asian-American to go into sports and make a name for himself.
So you're saying because Lin isn't black, and you want to see something different, thats why the movie was made. Not saying its a bad thing because money wise and media wise you're right. The people who made the movie don't care about lin or his story, its how much they can market him. They know Lin has a very strong Asian following, and like someone said before, some fans who would go watch the movie if he was just doing jumping jacks. Hence why they said the move will be released in select cities. I guarantee you for marketing reasons they will release the movie in cities with larger asian markets. Houston, LA, NY will 100% have this movie, but they can't release it everywhere because it would flop in some other cities. there's nothing wrong with wanting to see something different, and i don't doubt it'll be a good movie. Just have to realize everything is about marketing and money now days, so i guess i understand the sudden push and premature making of this documentary.
lol the filmmakers followed lin for a long time, it's definitely a labour of love. Even tinman agrees with it. But I get it, you are just doubting everything which is associated with lin, as usual.
hilarious blog article about linsainty from a hardcore asian knicks fan http://strive4excellenceblog.wordpress.com/2013/08/28/hating-and-loving-linsanity/
Dude...filming 3 years before the "Linsanity" events even took place is NOT premature. The filmmakers even wanted to film him earlier than when they eventually did because Lin didn't want to do it at first. I will wait anxiously for the release of the Danny Green documentary. Must be a good one per some sources.
Hell I'd like to see a documentary on Lin's parents. Immigrants that came with little to nothing, went to college, finished college. Got jobs ~ became wealthy by the mantra - hard work, endure, get that degree, get that job, earn your keep. American dream right there.
If you haven't read about Lin's parents, here is a very interesting article. It may be the same article Caris posted. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/02/26/s...res-lins-achievement.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0
lol this reminds me of Ang Lee's first film. someone uploaded the whole film in youtube. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/CMpKszSqxkY" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
I'm not sure. I just assumed so because they were looking for funding through Kickstarter to finish the film - sound editing, graphics, colour-correction, etc.
I believed I saw the finished product. review http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showpost.php?p=7735000&postcount=160 pics http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=234714&page=4
