Caught a few shows at the Stephen F Austin Bar, that was awesome. Small venue, you can sit down and order drinks and food while the music is right there. Oh, I saw Nas at Moody. He played tracks from Illmatic. my 90s hiphop thirst was satisfied.
saw of Montreal (jesusgodalmighty I LOVE their new album), Andrew WK, Youth Lagoon, Deerhoof, Washed Out, Zola Jesus, few others...went mostly for drinking and wasn't let down. Club De Ville treated us well, Thursday was $5 and Friday and Saturday were free, all you can drink. IFC croassroads was fun, Andy Rourke was just sitting up there DJing for hours, and we got a ton of free crap. So much FUN! i miss austin. Can't wait til SXSW13!
I was gonna see Youth Lagoon last night at Fitzgerald's but I couldn't end up going. Disappointed about that. Was looking forward to seeing Trevor live. Anybody see Grimes? Her new album "Visions" currently dominates my car CD player. Best album of '12 so far.
Youth Lagoon was most impressive at this year's festival. I wasn't a big fan of his music before seeing them live, but now I'm a believer in their music. I saw Grimes twice as well. It was a bit disappointing since she had voice issues stemming from a sore throat at both shows. She kept apologizing and started and abruptly halted many songs in the middle due to voice problems. She is mad cute though. I'll compile my list of bands I saw later today.
^^^ I actually only caught the last song of YL's set in Austin -- I was already planning to see him at Fitz, so I didn't make an effort to get there in time. I was there last night, the show was okay. Though, the crowd was really weird, or maybe I should say, not weird. It seems like 90% of the crowd were St. Paddy's day barhoppers, guys who got lost on the way to the Andrew W.K. show, and a lot of high school kids; I felt like I was at the wrong show in the wrong city. Everybody seemed to cheer and sing along for a random song off the album, so I'm wondering if YL had a song used on some tv show or movie. Anyway, he played keys and sang while his buddy played guitar; they were able to reproduce their sound live very well. That said, he played the songs I liked early on in the set and I was getting kinda bored, so I left about halfway through, haha (I never do that btw). You didn't miss too much -- the show was fine, but not exceptional. I think I saw them Thursday night at Vice on 6th -- it was a big place. Which Of Montreal show did you catch -- was it the Sundlandic Twins performance? I would've liked to see that since his last couple albums haven't done much for me. Also, how was Zola Jesus live?
Haha, well I guess our YL reviews may cancel each other out -- I saw him at Mohawk on Thursday. Though I'm sorry you didn't get the best Grimes experience, at least I feel a little better knowing that I only missed a hampered performance.
The crowd can make all the difference if a show is enjoyable or not especially if you are standing in the back. I saw YL on Tuesday at Red 7, so most of the people there were actually there for the music and not just there to hangout like is the case later in the week with a lot of shows.
Best venue I was at was actually on the roof of Whole Foods. The weather was great. It wasn't jam packed. Beer was cheap (just had to go in the store and buy a couple of 6-packs). Music was surprisingly good. Saw a British band called The Chevin who were very good.
The small venue places were great. Whole Foods rooftop seems like a great idea. Could you sit down? My oldness likes places where you can sit.
That's cool man, I caught them twice over SXSW fifth time I've seen them in total. I think they are one of the most fun live bands. All cool guys too, I've met most of them and they will chill and talk with fans.
