Nope, watched him at Purdue so I know what he can do with the ball. The significance of playing one on one with his brother is that his brother is a starting player with the Wisconsin Badgers.
Don't know how you can say he would be slow defensively until you try it. McGrady is a one man slow down clog to our fast break and defensive quickness. All he does is stand around on the weakside defensively. Landry has got to be quicker than him at helping, recovering, and scrambling. My thought was looking at matchups down the road. Lakers are gonna eventually bring in Bynum, Gasol, and likely Walton up front. There may be some other teams that try to big on us at the 3. And I am intrigued by Landry's athleticism. He seems to have the ability to just float up and down the court, so much energy. And we could possibly create a terrible mismatch in our favor offensively. Can you imagine him posting up a 3???
Here's how Landry did at TAMU last year and what the press said about him. Carl Landry – Carl was extremely efficient tonight with 21 points in 21 minutes. He also added eight rebounds, one turnover and one unbelievable blocked shot against their seven-foot center). On defense he took a charge and he battled their big man toe-to-toe. He also picked up a technical foul for something he said to one of the officials after being knocked to the floor on a shot and he continued to struggle at the freethrow line (9-of-15). It was a rugged game tonight as the officials really let them play, but Carl deserved the technical and he must do a better job of controlling his emotions. http://oldgoldfreepress.com/columnist/Guest_Columnist/columns/185.shtml LOL Dude is a warrior!!
First i will like to see how Landry and Scola do as second unit without Yao, maybe they can Both hel Yao reduce his minutes about 3-4 minutes a game and THAT would be great.
No way Yao, Landry and Scola should be in the game at the same time unless there is a specific end of game situation or the opposing team has an odd lineup on the floor. Either Landry or Scola trying to guard a decent SF is a joke. They would be helpless.
So that would mean Tracy would be at the 2 wich I don't particularlly like from a defensive standpoint. Maybe if the matchups allow it and for short spurts it may be interesting to put it out there.
Landry is an interior player. He's a beast down low so you don't want him handling the ball all the time. 2006 http://www.collegehoopsnet.com/community/printthread.php?t=3765 If you haven't heard of Carl Landry, yet, you will soon enough. The senior missed the entire season last year because of injuries and Purdue season's immediately went down the toilet after that. He was the lone reason the team won any games two seasons ago. Well him and David Teague that is, who also missed the entire season last year. With both of those guys returning Purdue's chances to field a competitive team improved as great as any team in the country. In terms of strictly being an interior scorer, Carl Landry is arguably one of the five best in the entire country. He's that good and he's that valuable to Purdue this season. Is he a good enough player to carry the entire team? No but he's a big piece of the puzzle. He's got great hands and footwork on the interior. Has a polished offensive game consisting of jump hooks, up and under moves, pump fakes, dunks and putbacks. He's the complete package offensively. Landry is not going to be able to do it all on his own though and thats where Nate Minnoy and David Teague come into play. Both players combined to play in about 16 games last season and that was just not enough. Purdue last year was one of the most banged up teams in the country.
Can the discussion turn to the problems this forward tandem would create for the opponents? Enough of what they can't do... what about what they can do?
I think for about 10-15 minutes a game with this lineup initially would be very interesting. It would cause all kinds of matchup problems for opponents.
Didn't have time or desire to read every post in here. My .02 is that Landry's game reminds me a good bit of Kenny Thomas. IIRC, Kenny Thomas played some spot 3 minutes due to the PF glut at the time (Mo T, Eddie Griffin, KT). MHO is that Landry would be spot SF minutes at best. A minute here...a minute there...sort of Adelman temporarily inverting himself into Don Nelson.
I'd prefer to keep him in the paint and around the basket. Thats part of why his fg% is so high. If Adelman thinks that Landry can play a few minutes at the 3 then I'm all for it.
I like the idea but it's not going to happen period although i give him the benefit of the doubt. He has shown he can shoot from the outside, maybe he can even shoot the three well who knows, so why not.
