But it would go a ways toward confirming what some have been fearing for awhile -- that the business of making money from the team and the business of building a title contender are in conflict in Houston.
This is a good post! Especially when we consider that Jarrett Jack had eerily similar numbers as a starter to Lin last year Jack 16 ppg 6.6 apg and 2.4tpg Lin 18ppg 7.7apg 4.7tpg Jack also shot at a better percentage. You'd have to wonder what his stats might have been like had he been playing with a few other guys who could actually play basketball? Heck, Chris Duhon had 7 apg and 11 ppg in the D'Antoni system. I don't know if I'd be thrilled to pay $8mill for an average NBA point guard. MLE sure, but nothing more.
I've been trying to stay positive! But if we payed $8mill for Lin I'd join the "new owner please" crowd.
if you say that, then dragic doesn't deserve that much money either. they put up very similar numbers as starters in about 25-28 games. I don't get how dragic is way better than lin. they are both unproven so paying either of them that kind of money is overpaying. you can't say for certain that one is better than the other. as for the inflated numbers, lin just played great. you gotta be a good player to run an offense with those guys he had out there.
If NY can offer Lin 4yr/24M, then why even visit with him if we are not prepared to offer him more than this? And then of course, for say 4yr/34M we might get Dragic to bite.
If I say what then Dragic doesn't deserve that money either? I don't get it. Dragic is not that slow, not that turnover-prone and wasn't playing under D'Antoni. I don't get what you're saying. I didn't say anything about a small sample size. Dragic is not a home run either... he's a risk to give a big contract too. But eyeball test alone, I'd rather give it to Dragic. He's actually done it with this team and coach. But that's not the point... just because we miss on Dragic doesn't mean we have to take a bigger risk to fill that hole.
I have a funny feeling in about 2 years Dragic at $10 mill per year is going to be like looking at Gortat and his contract today. Remember that? Morey wouldn't go over like $4.5 million or something. Now....Gortat is a bargain at $6 million.
Perhaps it's just a small way of attempting to hold on to the extra benefits Yao's presence and stature brought to the organization (the absence of which has bound to have been a bitter pill to swallow over the last couple of years). Maybe the level of conflict represented by this small part of the bigger picture wouldn't necessarily cause an true imbalance in the issue of making money vs building a title contender. I dunno...these are tough things to for someone like me to analyze. I just hope the Rockets can work it out to have either Dragic or perhaps Lin on the roster next season..(well, especially assuming the possibility of the loss of Lowry to trade...which in itself is a lot to assume given the current dynamics involved).
What, you mean there's a cost free option with a longer track record of success available for under $6 million a year? Imagine that. I hope Morey makes a dinner reservation for Kyle and Kevin somewhere nice.
Yeah, exactly. And they may ... problem though is Kyle is generally a problem all the time... they could maybe fix this going in to the start of the season, but he'll be a pain in the rear on most days. I tend to think that relationship is beyond repair and that they will still trade him -- that's how they will hope to really improve this summer. Still, I'd hate to dump Lowry and then pay more for Lin. We'll see.
Here we go again, underestimating Lin. I'd love to have him on the Rockets. He's been learning to play the PG position on the go, and I'm impressed. I'm "one of those" who thinks he has potential to get better, and with his work-ethic, which is second to none, he'll get there. Not scared off by his high turner over ratio at all. Most of the turnovers came in the later quarters when the Knicks didn't have adequate back ups to eat away some of his minutes in a back-to back-to back games-type season. Love the intangibles. Team mates loved playing with/for him. He brought out the best in the likes of Steve Novak, Jared (Freakin) Jeffries, and Tyson Chandler. Not many players have the ability to galvanize a team and fan base like Lin. The ho-hum atmosphere (outside of the Rowdies) @ the TC could use an injection of "Linsanity". And some of the away games will feel like home games too.
Clutch. some rockets fans care more about the popularity contest than the basketball contests. They prefer to be on Tnt than getting a mvp. If you transport some of them back in time, they would care more about whet Bob Costas says then what Rudy T says. They want a symbol not a hero. We don't need another hero..beyond thunderdome
Yep. Not sure the Rockets are willing or able to get Dragic back. The rumors around the web say Dragic is probably gone or him and the Rockets are so far apart they cant find a good middle. In that context I would take a chance on Lin if we have to also move Lowry at some point.
I haven't really seen Morey over pay anyone but Scola. I don't think he will do anything stupid with Lin, like pay him $8mil.
When was the last time we had a MVP? when was the last time we had a championship? Some people here are happy with having popular players.
