COngrats on Houston's 5th anniversy of LRT. I still love the fact that Houston got LRT up and running more than a year before we got it here in Minneapolis. Yeah it would be great if they could extend mass transit to the airport. Minneapolis's LRT runs to the airport and even though I fly several times a year I almost never drive to the airport anymore. Its great not having to deal with cabs or paying for parking.

It costs me $5.35 to take the BART to the airport from downtown SF, and only takes 30 minutes.

In order for mass transit to be effective, it needs to connect the main hubs of the city, starting with downtown and the airport. Narita is a good 50-60 km from Tokyo, but the JR line is a pretty quick way to get out there. Ditto Hong Kong, with the elevated train. It's embarassing that even places like Portland and Minneapolis have such vastly improved infrastructure than Houston.

Even though it is nowhere close to where I live, I congratulate Houston on moving this forward. I think it's great that other people begin to enjoy traffic-free movement. I can't wait to get this out to the Western side of town.
What's your point for posting this video, sir? Show dumb drivers' mistakes?

@:18, the light was clearly red. At many other times, the arrow on the road says "straight only" and they turn left. :p

Thanks, BTW. I had a few laughs.

Its pretty sweet that BART now runs to the airport. When I went to CAL we had to take Samtrans bus to downtown SF and then catch BART.

Don't feel bad that Portland and Minneapolis have better infrastructure. Those two metro regions were among the most progressive in urban planning during the last 3 decades and are also much smaller than Houston.

D/FW Airport is in kind of the same situation, though at least there was the excuse of wanting the airport to serve Fort Worth as well as Dallas.

DART Rail will get to Love Field in December of 2010 and all the way to D/FW in December 2013.

I believe Houston has some advantages in building out their rail system. For one, I think they can borrow more from the get-go (DART had to pay-as-they-went at first, which made for slow build-out), and most of where the Houston rail is going is actually in Houston. DART has to connect a bunch of suburbs, all of which have to vote to agree to give DART part of their sales tax money.

    How much did it cost?

They should allow beer during Texans games for the people going out to tailgate.

For some reason that doesn't sound like it would pass b/c people would take up extra space that could have gone to another passenger.

I think its great that Dallas is taking the right steps to build out the DART network. Looks like Houston has some catch up to do in this regard.

That's exactly why. I'm still against light rail, but that's not the purpose of the video. It's just funny as hell.

    Holy ****.

How the hell do people not see the damn train? That is crazy. It's not the train, it's the idiot drivers.

That's pretty crazy with all the left turns at point blank range. It's like nobody checks theirs mirror before changing lanes.

This is what Bellaire to Houston transit was supposed to be in the 60's. Of course, at that time, Bellaire was considered "The Woodlands" as far as suburbs go...

I pity the folks on I-45 this morning. Huge wreck just before 610 on the south side. I cruised by on the bus. ;)

They are opening the Katy HOV lanes to single passengers with Easy tag this weekend. If it's successful they might do it on I-45 and other major commuter routes.
