The best feeling when life has defeated you is when a major appliance breaks down, you are able to do the research and find the parts, and you go about fixing the appliance yourself. I've done fixes on my dishwasher (a leaky specialized valve I had to find and replace), my side-by-side whirlpool fridge (installed a new icemaker and new water valve that controls water flow to icemaker and water dispenser), and my garage door opener (installed a new main circuit board). I used to be totally hands-off and was defeated. I would call the service tech and get some ugly fat bill. NO MORE! I FIX MY OWN APPLIANCES DAMMIT! SAVE ME MONEY! If that fails to raise myself from defeat, then there is always the empowerment that comes with buying my own toilet paper.
I can relate. Waiting to figure out how to get solar panels, an AC in the garage and a new outdoor gas grill. Oh, and furniture in general (for the new house). Thinking about whether to get one of these pool fences (to protect our small children). Never thought I would waste any thought on any such things. We're ****ing old.
Funny, it's the other way around for me...I grew up poor and now that I don't have to fix appliances myself, which is always a frustrating, knuckle bleeding venture, it's a big life-defeating win. I just either pay someone or buy a new appliance (and sell the old one to the junk man).
This is probably the BEST upgrade I've done on my house. Insulate the garage door, split unit AC. I paid a guy to run an extra circuit to the garage and put the split unit in myself. Garage went from the hot ass dirty room where we stored **** we use once every year to a functioning gym, workbench, arcade game room that I can open an entire wall on when the weather is nice.
You're giving me some ideas. Must not buy a pool table and put in garage along with garage window A/C unit...along with treadmill, bowflex, and exercise bike. I would free up an entire spare bedroom! Wouldn't be able to park the car in the garage, though. Then, car suffers hail damage or is burgled. I can't win! It's defeating.
Yeah, we would like to put the workout equipment in there. It's a 3 car garage, so there would be some space. Problem is that the big ass gas generator will be behind the garage, so we're not sure where we will be allowed to put the outdoor bit of the split unit.
Better get those solar panels quickly so you can be grandfathered in on the credit program. Also, make sure the insurance company will insure your house. We had one company that refused to insure our house because it had solar panels. I had 1 question and 1 comment. Question - why not? Comment - it's moot because we don't have solar panels. (They were confusing solar heating for our pool which doesn't use panels, with solar panels)
Ain't that the truth! Can't believe it'll be going on 22 years since I finally registered to begin posting on the site. The things we stress over, think about, and get excited about these days.....unreal. My wife said I reminded her of my 100 year old grandfather, because i take so long researching / going back and forth on a decision when comparing products / deals etc.
I do the same thing. It can be tedious. But, it's necessary imo to get the best product / deal at the lowest price point. And, I have to read like every review and weigh the positive versus negative. Then, I debate whether the negative reviews...they just got lemons. My mind goes through all these processes until I finally arrive at a decision. Sigh.
The footprint is very small and there's a flexible bundle of cables/copper pipe that goes to it. Get a mount and you can put it 10ft up.
I had a pool table and it sat unused 98% of the time. You can probably find one free if you move it, because they're so ****ing heavy (same as old pianos). Check Facebook Marketplace if you're serious. There's a funny mental shift I've noticed with my wife- When I go into the garage to work out or fiddle I get left alone. I don't get that consideration in my home office. It's like 'Garage=Man'. Even though she uses it to work out too, she doesn't step foot in there otherwise.
Word of warning.... is your generator installed according to code? If not AND you do something like install a condenser unit, a permit guy from the city/county may flag it.
