The 'government option' is a choice for higher healthcare costs, increasing deficits and a reduced quality of health care in this country. This bill is a disgrace and it should not pass. The Democratic lawmakers that are opposing this bill are doing a great service for our country. It is too bad you apparently cannot see that.
Reduced how? If you haven't noticed we have some huge problems with health care already and its no accident that other industrialized countries out perform us in measures of health such as life expectancy and infant mortality. I have my doubts about any health care reform being revenue neutral but considering how bad things are right now that is a risk worth taking. As for people like Lieberman and Bayh I don't think maintaining the status quo is doing the country a service.
You say. If you present the question as only being about holding the insurance companies accountable, people are for it, as you said. But when you explain that this involves the government getting involved in the health insurance business, and that because of the government subsidies to this its own 'option' the health insurers will be eventually be forced out of business, ultimately requiring the pollees to move to the government option whether they like it or not, people are against it. The vast majority of people in this country are happy with their healthcare arrangements. These people are in favor of the concept of healthcare reform, but when you explain the effects these proposals will have on their own lives, that changes their opinions substantially. The questions for the polls that support your assertion are misleading. And therefore so are the results of the polls. oh well

It's not just deficit neutral. The GAO says it will actually reduce the deficit. Those are their independent numbers. He not only says that the bill needs to be deficit neutral but that if it later turns out it isn't, he'll make cuts in spending until it is. You can doubt it, but then why talk about it? If you aren't going to believe any of the information about how the bill will be paid for, then you're mind is made up, and you are going to go with your own gut feeling instead of numbers by independent Accounting agencies.
